Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorena Lorenzo.
Hi Lorena, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey as an artist started in Havana, Cuba, where I studied Fine Arts from a young age and developed a deep connection to drawing, painting, and visual storytelling. Art has always been the way I understand and express the world around me.
After moving to Toronto in 2008, I continued my education at OCAD University and the Toronto School of Art, while also building my career in the tattoo industry. I began tattooing in 2009, and over the years I’ve developed my own approach that combines my fine-art background with the intimacy and permanence of tattooing.
Today, I’m the founder and head artist of IndigoArtattoos in Toronto. My work is strongly influenced by my Caribbean roots, nature, colour, movement, and the idea of turning personal stories into something visual and lasting. Alongside tattooing, I continue to explore painting, public art, live painting, and other creative projects.
What started as a passion for creating art has grown into a career that allows me to connect with people through their stories and create art that becomes part of their lives. I’m still evolving as an artist, and I’m always looking for new ways to push my creativity beyond the tattoo studio.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been building a creative career from the ground up after moving to Toronto and having to establish myself in a new city and industry.
There have been periods of uncertainty, financial pressure, and moments when I questioned whether I was on the right path. As an artist, there is also the constant challenge of staying inspired while running a business, managing clients, and continuing to push myself creatively.
Another challenge has been learning how to evolve beyond simply being a tattoo artist and allowing myself to explore all the different sides of who I am as an artist — painting, public art, live painting, design, and other creative projects.
Those challenges have actually shaped me. They taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of continuing to create even when things aren’t easy. I’ve learned that success in the creative world isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes you have to reinvent yourself, take risks, and keep going even when you don’t know exactly where the road is leading.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a multidisciplinary artist and tattoo artist, and I’ve been working professionally in the tattoo industry since 2009. My background in Fine Arts has always been at the heart of my work, but tattooing became the medium that allowed me to combine my love for drawing, painting, design, and storytelling with something deeply personal and permanent.
I’m the founder and head artist of IndigoArtattoos in Toronto, where I specialize in custom tattoo work, particularly pieces that are artistic, detailed, feminine, colourful, and meaningful to the person wearing them. I’m very involved in the creative process, from developing the initial concept to creating a design that feels unique to each individual.
Beyond tattooing, I continue to explore painting, public art, live painting, murals, and other forms of visual art. I don’t see myself as someone who belongs to only one medium — I’m constantly looking for new ways to create and challenge myself.
What I’m most proud of is building a career around my own creativity and creating a space where art and people come together. I’ve built my path independently, while continuing to evolve as an artist.
I think what sets me apart is the combination of my Fine Arts background, my years of experience in tattooing, and my personal visual language. My work is influenced by nature, colour, movement, and my Caribbean roots, and I’m always trying to create something that feels alive rather than simply decorative. For me, art is about creating something that has emotion, personality, and a story behind it.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I would say perseverance is the quality that has been most important to my success. I’ve had to build my career largely on my own, adapt to change, and keep moving forward even during periods of uncertainty and difficulty.
Being an artist also requires a lot of patience and resilience. Creativity doesn’t always come easily, and success isn’t always immediate, but I’ve learned to keep showing up, keep learning, and keep pushing myself to grow.
I think another important part of my success is that I genuinely care about what I create. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve and evolve rather than becoming comfortable with what I’ve already accomplished.
For me, perseverance isn’t just about refusing to give up. It’s about being willing to start over, reinvent myself, take risks, and continue believing in my work even when the path isn’t clear.
