Today we’d like to introduce you to Lejan De La Garza And Robb Banda.
Hi Lejan De La Garza and Robb Banda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We first met at Paul Mitchell The School San Antonio in 2011—Robb as a cosmetology student and Lejan as the Service Desk Coordinator. After Robb graduated in 2013, Lejan moved to Hawaii to begin his education at Paul Mitchell The School Honolulu.
When Lejan returned in 2016, Robb invited him to join the Lux team, where we continued to grow professionally.
In 2020, COVID forced the temporary closure of many salons, including Lux. The original owner considered shutting down permanently, but we knew we weren’t ready to let Lux go. We had a small but incredibly dedicated team who loved working together, and we wanted to preserve that.
So in November 2020, we took a leap—taking over the business, relocating, and reimagining our little shop of hair. Since then, we’ve continued to grow, evolve, and do the work we love every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This was the first business either of us had ever owned, and honestly? We were diving in headfirst with no floaties. We only had two weeks—two—to learn everything it takes to run a salon, all while navigating the chaos of a global pandemic and still seeing clients out of another salon that graciously let us rent spots. And if that wasn’t enough, picture two headstrong, sassy gay guys determined to keep this shop alive. It was ambitious, a little wild, and definitely not for the faint of heart.
But we’re obsessed with what we do, so we hustled. We researched, asked questions, made mistakes, fixed them, and surrounded ourselves with smart, supportive people who helped steer us forward. That mix of grit, passion, and just the right amount of determination is what built the foundation we’re standing on today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We do hair—all kinds of hair. From custom color transformations and bold fashion shades to mohawks, mullets, seamless butterfly layers, highlights, and everything in between.
But what we do goes far beyond the technical side. We make people feel good. Over the years, our clientele has evolved into something more personal than a service list—it often feels like we’re catching up with friends who just happen to be in our chair.
We’ve grown alongside our clients. We’ve watched them graduate, move across the country, start families, chase new careers, and navigate life’s plot twists. We listen to the highs and lows, celebrate their wins, support them through rough patches, welcome their engagements and new babies—and yes of course, we stay up to date on the chisme too.
In many ways, the work is hair… but the connection is everything.
How do you think about happiness?
When it comes to business, our top priority is ensuring every client leaves our shop feeling happy and confident. Knowing we played a part in brightening someone’s day is what drives us—and it’s the standard we strive to uphold with every service.
