Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Miles.
Hi Kristina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I knew I wanted to work in real estate when I was only 16. Looking back, 4 years later, I think, “What insane 16-year-old decides they want a career in this crazy business!” The truth is, no one can prepare you to become an entrepreneur. In school, I played sports, kept high grades, and always worked a part-time job, so I thought that I had the discipline needed to work in real estate and would be easy for someone like me. This business can be challenging, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I started my real estate career working in property management as an intern during the summer of my junior year of high school. I learned a lot and am eternally grateful for the opportunity and the people I met there, but I realized property management wasn’t for me. Regardless, I signed up to start my real estate courses and worked on completing them throughout my senior year of high school. However, senior year wasn’t a breeze for me – I had set my heart on attending university, just as I had been told my whole life. Still, after getting into the University of Texas at San Antonio and seeing the costs, I realized I had to reevaluate my decision. It was tough – watching all my friends and colleagues go off to college and experiencing new chapters of their lives – I felt stuck.
After a while, I had to believe that everything happens for a reason, and this was my sign to go all in on something I was passionate about for most of my high school career. The summer after I graduated, I was determined to get another opportunity to work in real estate. I told everyone I knew I was getting my license and took every opportunity to learn from others in the business. After nights scrolling on Indeed for assistant or internship positions for real estate companies and having no luck, my sister’s good friend heard that I was looking for work in real estate and recommended a friend of hers. She reached out to her about me, and finally- I got it- an opportunity.
It was a marketing internship, but that didn’t matter to me. I knew I was going to be around the business I was growing to love, and I was going to be able to learn. Little did I know this team offering me an internship was the San Antonio Business Journal’s #4 top team in the city. I interned with them for 6 months before I finally passed my tests and got licensed. At this point, I knew I could only join their team with at least 2 years of experience and was already preparing to find another brokerage, begin my career, and come back to them when I had some sales under my belt. To my surprise, they offered me a spot on the team. Even though I tried to remain cool, I was so excited. They admired my work ethic and drive; they took a chance on me, and I am forever grateful for them.
It’s been over a year since I’ve been working side by side with them, and about 7 of those months as a licensed agent, and I have learned so much. I am so grateful to be a part of The RoPax Group, a team composed of such hard-working and successful individuals. I truly admire all of them. Although I’ve gotten a few sales under my belt, I still learn something new every day, and that’s the beauty of this business – you never stop learning. It’s only been a few short months in my career, and this is only the beginning.
I look forward to serving more people in San Antonio this next year and expanding my business! If you take anything from my story, understand that some things don’t go as planned, and that’s sometimes good. Listen to yourself and your intuition, and trust your path will pave its way. At the time, not going to University felt like the worst thing that could’ve happened to me, but it turned out to be the opposite. I wouldn’t change it even if I could!
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey hasn’t been easy, and one of the most significant challenges I’ve faced, which I continue to tackle daily, is shifting my mindset. Transitioning from a full-time student to thinking like an entrepreneur has been challenging. As a student, you’re given clear instructions on assignments, their execution, and deadlines. However, things couldn’t be more opposite in the real estate industry. There’s no one holding your hand; you must become your boss and hold yourself accountable. In this business, you never know where your next deal will come from, so adopting an entrepreneurial mindset is crucial to seek out and seize those opportunities.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
