Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin And Jared Moore
Hi Kristin and Jared, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Science Guys of San Antonio started in 2023 when we moved to San Antonio. However, The Science Guys have been around for over 20 years and was started in Nashville, TN, where we moved from. Kristin met the Science Guys when she was teaching 2nd grade science in 2016 and connected with the founder, Keith Trehy, and brought their services to the title 1 school she was working at. She continued to work with Science Guys in Nashville, leading summer camps and after school clubs, while also helping with classroom management training for staff, organization and curriculum development, while also continuing to teach full time. The last year that we were in Nashville, Jared began to work with Science Guys as well!
In 2023 we decided to move to San Antonio to be closer to Jared’s family and Keith asked us if we would help expand the Science Guys to Texas. We have other locations in Baltimore, MD and San Diego, CA, as well. We were thrilled for the opportunity and gave him an energetic YES!
Between a HUGE move, working full time jobs and adopting 2 more dogs, making a total of 3, we worked hard at establishing relationships across the city and surrounding areas. We’ve partnered with Vanessa Richaud at Chill’N for birthday parties, summer camps and science classes and it has been such a blessing.
Kristin has since resigned from teaching full-time and is focusing on Science Guys of San Antonio wholly, with the help and support of Jared while he continues his full-time job. We have after-school clubs all week at 7 different locations, are providing in-school field trips, workshops for homeschool groups, providing interactive demonstrations for scouts groups, participating in family engagement events and having so much fun celebrating birthdays with science themed parties! We are growing and even looking to start hiring more instructors.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the beginning, when we first moved to San Antonio, Kristin was still teaching and Jared was beginning a new job. All this while we were also trying to grow a business presented challenges trying to divide our time and build our brand, our website, create content and marketing materials, book jobs and provide programs. It was overwhelming! There were days that we weren’t sure how we would pay the bills, which we had never experienced before! Being in a new place and not knowing many people has also been a big struggle mentally and emotionally while dealing with all of the struggles of building a business.
Since June Kristin has committed all of her focus on the Science Guys and we have grown a lot, but even now we are constantly wondering if we are doing everything right and second guessing ourselves. We try to learn from our mistakes, but sometimes it’s tough to get back up again when we’ve been “knocked down”. While learning to work together and live together can be a challenge at times, it’s also what has helped us each to grow and continue to build our business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Science Guys of San Antonio specializes in making science fun, cool and easy for kids of all ages and abilities. We bring hands-on and engaging science shows and workshops to you!
What sets us apart from others is that we are inclusive of all people. Our rules are simple, 1. Be safe, 2. Be respectful and 3. Have FUN! But we can’t have fun if we are not being safe and respectful, and that includes being respectful of our differences and promoting a safe space for all. While our main focus and goal for our programs are to make science exciting and fun, we are also working on social skills and teamwork as a goal, as well.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
As mentioned, The Science Guys is a franchise with several locations across the country. The owner of our San Diego location, Kathryn Beamon, has been such a tremendous help in getting our business set up since she had just gone through the same start-up process.
We also would not be where we are without the support of Vanessa Richaud, owner of Chill’N Ice Cream in San Antonio. She’s opened her doors and helped us grow with a wonderful partnership, always promoting us and providing a space for science classes and birthday parties!
Laura Greer, social media influencer, has also been a great mentor with a vast knowledge of social media outreach and an extensive following. Her continued support has been incredible for us and it’s a nice feeling to have someone familiar with our market.
