Life & Work with Kathie Newberry of New Braunfels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathie Newberry.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
. A little about our company, as far as my records show Nature’s Mercantile has been dream of the owner’s since 2002. In the early 2010s she had a store on Hwy 46 in New Braunfels that flooded just after opening. She tabled the dream until 2018- when I arrived and she opened a store near downtown originally intended to sell monuments or stones, during that time she found that jewelry making was a way to unleash her creative mind. Since closing the store in 2022, we have refined our inventory and methods to a point where we focus on trade shows like the Comal County Fair, Pridefest, NB Ren Faire & Saengerfest. While our company may be small, the owner takes pride in all her bracelets, gemstone, and mosaic items and each is unique, handcrafted & nature inspired.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road, there have been some bumps. The flood of the original store in 2012 and COVID complicating order processing in the beginning of this decade.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Nature’s Mercantile is a way to create beauty and put in into the world. Aside from the silversmithing and beadwork, our process for cane & walking stick creation is exciting. Each one tells a story & will hopefully help people make their way

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Growing up in San Marcos, by Lime Kiln Rd- eating chili dogs in Sewell Park.
