Today we’d like to introduce you to Isamar
Hi Isamar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in the 90s, surrounded by gospel music and the pop music era, most of my days consisted of dreaming of becoming a member of the next pop girl band. I accepted every opportunity that came my way to perform and sing, even though I was a fairly shy young girl. My opportunities consisted of singing in classrooms and high school bands and leading worship at my home church in the Bronx , NY. The gospel and urban influences encouraged me to believe that God can make His dreams for our lives come true no matter where we come from or the odds that may seem set up against us. In 2015 I made a major life decision to move to Texas and follow my dreams of becoming a singer. There I worked with my uncle Isaac Hernandez who is a producer of Latin gospel music. In 2018 we released my first gospel album “Volver a Sonar” Not long after I met my husband, who is a producer and now we release music together!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think one of the biggest challenges as an independent artist is the financial factor. Emerging out of college with student loan debt and trying to pursue a dream was really one of the greatest challenges. To produce music requires finances and time, where do you find these without burning out from the hustle?
When I faced these challenges in my life my greatest resource was prayer. I believe God places a dream in each and every one of us and it is part of our purpose on earth to partner up with Him and accomplish it. Doing so we can impart love, unity and beauty on this earth that so desperately needs it. In times of financial struggle I prayed to God for his provision and purpose in my life to come to pass and every time He would come through even if it seemed impossible. All this to say that when God found it right to provide for me, I was able to receive a grant for all cost of my album. Only God can do this!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer/songwriter of contemporary latin Gospel music. While growing up in the Latin Church in the Bronx to my Puerto Rican parents that are Pastors,I grew a passion for worship music. Today a lot of my influence in song writing comes from being planted at a church and leading worship at my local church.
Working alongside my husband who is my producer makes it fun to experiment new genres and explore urban latin influences from the cities we grew up in. Having both a mix of worship and urban music makes our music experience unique and authentic to our Latin roots. As we continue to release new music we find it both exciting and challenging to experiment with new sounds that bring out our culture and urban experience while staying true to why we do what we do which is to glorify God. Our desire is to continue to have these songs carry a message of hope and inner healing inspiring people all over the world.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I think one of the most important lessons I learned about my personal journey in being becoming an independent Gospel artist has been to not live my life in the hustle and striving of the business side of the music industry but instead work hard and trust Gods timing. Filling up your schedule just to keep busy doesn’t mean you are being productive or effective, instead filter through what opportunities are meaningful to you. In doing so, you will find that your decisions have greater impact and help you stay true to yourself and that is the greatest gift you can give the world!
