Life & Work with Giuseppe (Gi) Concas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giuseppe (Gi) Concas.

Hi Gi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
A freelance professional photographer specializing in cultural photography, I began my journey with photography at a very young age, just 9 years old, and have been continuously learning this wonderful discipline ever since. I focus on the traditions and customs of Ibiza. Born in Sardinia, I moved to Ibiza in 1998 after several different paths and places, and immediately connected with the island and its people. “I love experiencing life’s magical moments, and I don’t think there’s any work I enjoy as much as my photography.” I put passion into every project, every image, and I place great importance on providing excellent customer service. I focus on everything that embodies the real, authentic Ibiza and its essence. I love visiting and listening to the elderly and learning from them; above all, gaining a deeper understanding of their customs and roots is another way for me to do my part to ensure these traditions are not lost. One of the mottos I always live by is: “The hands that give will never be empty.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part was believing in myself.
I’ve been taking photos since I was nine, but one day a friend—a skilled professional photographer—shed some light on things for me. He said, “I tried to get this shot all night long, yet you managed it in just twenty-five frames and in no time at all; you should make a career out of this—your eyes see things that others’ don’t.”

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I previously spoke about my work; what makes me proudest is being recognized for everything I do and focus on.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First of all, I want to thank my friend Vicente from Ibiza—without him, I might have left the island. Next, my dear late friend Fran, who opened my eyes and pushed me into the world of photography; wherever you are, “THANK YOU.” And finally, the people around me who encourage me in all my crazy ideas and creations.
