Life & Work with Gianna Harvey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gianna Harvey.

Hi Gianna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I am a former high school English teacher, but makeup and skincare have always been a passion project of mine, and after I had my first child, I quit teaching and went to school at night for my license in esthetics. I’ve been licensed since May 2020. Within the last year, I decided to start marketing as a freelance makeup artist, and that venture has taken off. I have more bookings than I ever expected, I joined a bridal team of talented hair and makeup artists, and I branched off my makeup content into esthetics. In addition to makeup, I now offer spray tans, and body waxing is coming soon! I love working with women, for women.

Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In general, my journey since I started freelancing has been smooth. I love my clients, and I’ve met many amazing people who have played many roles: photographers, models, businesswomen, wedding coordinators, etc. But my business was created during a tough time in my life, in the height of COVID and during some challenging personal circumstances, including the loss of a pregnancy and my husband’s deployment. Initially, my logo incorporated the moon, which felt fitting as it moved through phases and always managed to shine again, even after dark; finding my footing in this industry has been healing. I am invigorated by the challenge of putting myself out there and gaining business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I started as Glow Girl Artistry, which recently branched into two platforms. Glam and Glow Studio is the esthetics piece of the business, and I do professional bridal makeup, still attached to the name Glow Girl (@glamandglow.studio & @glowgirl_mua on Instagram). My main focus on both platforms is the relationships I create with my clients. I love everyone that sits in my chair. I love their stories and the vulnerability and trust they put in me. I’m honored to serve them.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson has been to put myself out there and remain resilient. I am nowhere near perfect in my craft, but I am hungry for knowledge and always open to learning more. Most everyone in this industry is kind, welcoming, and encouraging. I’m an introvert at heart, but the people I have met make it safe for me to open up and try new things. Because of that, I’ve already been involved in many different environments, like studio shoots and styled shoots, on-location jobs at the most beautiful venues, creating a home studio space, etc. My next venture is probably finding a master esthetician to apprentice for and seeing what skills I can glean.
