Life & Work with Connie Viera of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Viera.

Hi Connie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Death Moth Studio Salon opened in July 2020, it wasn’t just about opening another hair salon. It was about creating the kind of space I wished existed—a salon where people could show up exactly as they are, without feeling like they had to fit a certain mold.

Over the years, we’ve described our brand identity as a place that’s modern, moody, welcoming, and deeply collaborative, where every appointment is about helping someone connect to themselves.

The name “Death Moth” has always been the heart of the story. Rather than representing a bad omen or death, it is a symbol of transformation, adaptation, and becoming. A death’s head moth isn’t conventionally beautiful—it’s fierce and evolves. That’s exactly how we see hair: not as a way to hide who someone is, but as a way to express the person they’re growing into.

We attract the people who align with us and make you question why—and how—you express yourself.

That idea has become the culture of the studio.

In the beginning, I was the only stylist behind the chair. I focused on creating an experience people couldn’t find anywhere else while doing construction in phases.

As the studio grew, so did my vision.
I’ve expanded into education, built a team, specialized in custom color, precision cutting, hand tied extensions, and later added mesh integration services for clients experiencing hair loss.
Along the way, our focus has stayed the same: creating an environment where both clients and stylists feel supported and inspired.

Now we are entering what feels like the second chapter. We’re working toward building a salon that can support a team, create careers, and become a lasting creative home. Everything we’ve worked on together—from loan applications and expansion plans to team handbooks and your salon mantra—has really been in service of that larger vision.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
* Opening during the 2020 pandemic taught us resilience, adaptability, and how to navigate uncertainty from day one.
* Operating out of a 100-year-old building came with endless lessons—construction delays, aging infrastructure, unexpected repairs, and embracing the charm that made the space unique.
* Learning the realities of construction and commercial spaces showed us that creating a beautiful salon requires constant maintenance, planning, and problem-solving.
* Understanding accessibility became an important part of our growth, influencing how we think about creating welcoming, functional spaces for every guest.
* Customer service became our foundation. We learned that communication, consistency, and trust are just as important as the services we provide.
* Building a business means wearing every hat. Behind the chair is only one piece of the puzzle—there’s leadership, finances, marketing, maintenance, education, and countless behind-the-scenes responsibilities.
* Keeping the studio running is hard work. Every challenge has strengthened our commitment to creating a salon that continues to evolve, adapt, and serve our community with intention.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve been a hairstylist for 10 years. I attended Paul Mitchell the school Austin in 2015. Since then I’ve specialized in balayage color, precision cutting, hand tied extensions, keratin tips and later added mesh integration services for clients experiencing hair loss. I love helping people who have experienced hair loss the most because it is so transformative and personal. Within the past 3 years I’ve expanded into education to growing stylists learn and offer classes in small groups and 1:1 classes.
