Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Hernandez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
SlowBurn Creations began with handmade artwork and graphic T-shirts. As my business grew, I introduced glass skull car diffusers and handcrafted gothic pillar candles. The response to my fragrances was overwhelmingly positive, and my friend Krystal encouraged me to expand them into body sprays and perfume oil rollers.
From the beginning, my goal was to create products that people could enjoy without worrying about the harsh ingredients often found in commercial fragrances. I formulate my products using clean fragrance oils that are free from phthalates, parabens, and other unnecessary toxins, making them a gentler option for those with sensitivities to traditional perfumes.
What started as a small collection of scented products has continued to evolve into a growing line that now includes lotions, soaps, beard oils, and more. Every new product is inspired by customer feedback and my passion for creating high-quality, thoughtfully crafted products that people can feel good about using.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been very lucky. My road has been smooth sailing for the most part. I am able to read my customers and can usually determine what will sell and what won’t. If a product doesn’t move as I expected, that’s OK. I discount it and continue on my way. I try to constantly grow and learn so I can please my clientele.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work part-time as a tire installer, which is quite different from running my business. Surprisingly, it’s also one of the best environments to test my products. My coworkers are always willing to try samples and give me honest feedback about the scents, their performance, and how long they last. After a long, dirty shift, if they can still smell my sprays, I consider that a successful test.
I genuinely love what I do, both professionally and as a business owner. I’ve learned to adapt, embrace change, and trust the process. Shifting my entire business model was intimidating, but I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have such loyal and supportive customers along the way.
Today, my fragrance sprays have become my best-selling product, and nothing is more rewarding than seeing familiar names return time and time again. Hearing customers share that my soaps and lotions have helped improve their skin barrier, that my sprays last throughout the day, or that they’re amazed by how long my wax melts continue to fill a room reminds me why I started this journey. Those moments make all the hard work worthwhile, and I couldn’t be more grateful
What’s next?
I’m not entirely sure where this journey will lead, and that’s part of what makes it so exciting. For now, I’m continuing to grow, experiment, and enjoy the creative process.
While owning a storefront is something I’d love to achieve one day, there’s something truly special about attending local markets. I enjoy the personal interactions, helping people discover a fragrance they genuinely connect with, and sharing the stories behind my products. Building those connections with complete strangers, who often become returning customers, is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. Those moments remind me that this business is about more than creating products. It’s about creating experiences and meaningful connections.
