Life & Work with Caitlin Wood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Wood.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I’ve always had a passion for photography, from taking classes in high school and owning my DSLR camera to taking photos of anything that caught my eye. I began small by taking photos of families and friends and building a portfolio once I learned photography was something I wanted to pursue. I discovered my love for wedding photography when my sister-in-law’s wedding photographer got COVID 3 days before the ceremony, and I had to step in at the very last minute! Wedding photography can be a lot of pressure, especially when you’re given such little notice, but I was addicted to the rush on wedding days. I loved capturing such a big moment in a couple’s life. Since then, I’ve invested a lot in my photography business and shifted my gears toward wedding photography. With the help of social media, I’ve created a platform and space where I could freely express my passion for this job, and along the way, I’ve made some amazing connections and friendships. My business has been growing ever since, and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Any entrepreneur starting up their own business is bound to face struggles along the way. With your own business, you have to be comfortable taking risks and making tough decisions while remaining optimistic for the future. I have had my fair share of struggles regarding my photography business. One of the biggest struggles I have faced so far is quitting my 9-5 day job to focus full-time on photography. This is a challenging decision to make by any means, given that photography can change drastically from month to month. Giving up the consistent paycheck, the benefits, and the paid time off, in exchange for a 24/7 job that only gives what you put into it can be very unsettling to many. I have learned that there is no right time to take the leap of faith. And that’s exactly what it is, a leap of faith. While the future is not guaranteed, following your passion will only bring success later. Many will question and doubt you, but having faith in yourself and confidence in your capabilities is more important than anything. My photography business couldn’t be a better example of how successful you can be when following your passion wholeheartedly.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a wedding and elopement photographer from San Antonio, Texas. I love being there to capture the most significant day in a couple’s life while giving them tangible memories to hold on to forever. Specializing in intimate elopements and weddings has been a dream of mine for years. I love being known for building close relationships with my clients and ensuring that I capture their unique personalities throughout their journey. I am most proud of the places photography has taken me over the years and the places that await me. From all over Texas to the California coast, and even South Africa and Iceland, I’ve accomplished many of my bucket-list destinations while doing something I love. What sets me apart from other photographers is the camaraderie that I love to share with my clients, the personality and laughter that I bring to the table, and my creativity for making memories and documenting their day.

Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
I’m very grateful for where I am today in my photography business and how far I have come. I acknowledge the privilege I have had regarding the opportunities I’ve been presented and my excellent support system. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the hard work and dedication I have put into every aspect of this business. From seeking out my ideal clients to building a brand and to investing the time and money to create the best experience possible, I believe the results I have been able to yield are directly related to the hard work I’ve put forth and the obstacles I have overcome along the way.
