Life & Work with American Sign Language Club Utsa of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to American Sign Language Club Utsa

Hi American Sign Language Club UTSA, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The American Sign Language Club at The University of Texas at San Antonio was founded in 2021 with the goals of making UTSA more Deaf-friendly and educating students about Deaf culture. Within the first semester as an active student organization, the club successfully advocated for UTSA to offer ASL courses again. Today, the club holds weekly meetings, monthly socials and fundraisers to continue and build on the foundations that were laid in 2021. We encourage students to join anytime to learn or practice sign language!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest struggle was in Fall 2024, when almost all the officers from the previous semester had graduated. Luckily, we had the remaining officers recruit a new board immediately. Now, we have over 300 members in our groupme!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
American Sign Language Club at UTSA focuses on teaching American Sign Language to students, as well as provide a space for students to practice. We also focus on deaf culture awareness, through various events we hold. We also conduct fundraisers, to help support our club, and mission of fostering a space on campus where students can connect through American Sign Language.
