Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenice Wehmeyer.
Hi Tenice, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After spending over 20 years in the corporate world, I decided I would start my own business focusing on my passion and dream to create harmony in every home around the world. Yes, I realize this is a lofty dream that many, including my husband, would say is absolutely absurd – but someone has to try so it might as well be me. What’s my angle? To reduce stress and frustration in the workplace so we can be fully engaged with those who matter most.
I do this by being dedicated to helping leaders and teams grow and deliver in every way they aspire—thriving in their professional lives and still having the energy they need to flourish personally. I partner with leaders to explore their current impact and level of engagement with those around them. Then using this deep self-awareness, I work with the leader to create a new productive impact with their team, peers, and key stakeholders and the energy to devote to their life outside of work.
I grew up with very humble beginnings and a strong determination to make a difference. I wanted to see everybody smile and be happy. Maybe I listened to Bob Marley’s Don’t Worry Be Happy too much as a teen. I wanted a college education, but my parents didn’t necessarily agree, they thought it was a waste of time and money.
When I graduated from high school, I loaded up my car and headed to Ft. Worth. I got a job, took some night classes, and lived in an apartment by myself where the bills started adding up quickly. Because I was determined, I got a second job. I couldn’t do it all – life happens. It was not working out, so I hit the pause button on my degree and started looking for a better job. I found a great opportunity at the Marriott Riverwalk – in downtown San Antonio. I started driving my career and found some successes through hard work and again, determination.
I continued to work hard and found success in HR and learning in tech and cyber companies. I was checking some boxes, but something was still missing. My husband supported me through his confidence and positive encouragement and when I talked about my goals and dreams, he would ask, “What’s stopping you?” During one of those “Okay, what’s the next chapter in my life?” discussions, I brought up wishing I’d finished college and again he asked, “What’s stopping you?” I didn’t have an answer this time – at least not a good one – so I enrolled. I spent the next seven years working full-time, traveling for work, taking classes, and following our son around Texas playing sports – often with books in hand. Yes, it was crazy, but I was determined, and my support system was strong. At 48,
I not only realized my dream of a college education, but I also exceeded it with my master’s degree and coaching certification.
There is absolutely no possible way my determination alone would have gotten me there. My determination was unbreakable – but my never-ending support system made it possible.
Then in 2016 when I said I wanted to start my own business, I’m sure you know exactly what my husband said: “What’s stopping you?”
My clients are leaders with determination, and I am part of their support system.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We’ve all had turning points; everyone navigates challenges and obstacles. There are setbacks, peaks, and valleys and there are successes. Building a business is hard – websites, social media, marketing, billing, bookkeeping, and sales – none of these are my area of expertise. There are many unknowns and I’ve reached out in all directions for help. I know I can’t do it alone. There are many business support systems that help me get the job done.
Many people have some level of challenges and struggles in their work life. We also all have a life outside of work which may or may not be challenging. I’ve had my fair share of personal and family struggles while working on building my business – accidents, injuries, deaths, and distractions. Life is complex and adversity is often present.
Not to mention the pandemic – everybody knows what happened in 2020! Parts of my business were basically shut down and in other areas, I had to pivot.
What keeps me going? My determination, my goals, my dreams, and my aspirations. Having my goals written down and my legacy outlined has made it so much easier for me to stay focused, pull myself together, and get back on track toward accomplishing the goals that are important to me.
This is also my approach to my clients. While their goals are set in their work life, I coach the whole person. We all have bad days. The challenges, struggles, and adversity that happens in our life affect us at work and at home.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As a leadership coach and consultant, I work with my clients to explore their situations and what solutions will best meet their goals. These clients range from individuals looking for career coaching to executives looking for help navigating strategic challenges in their business or with their teams. Often these 1:1 engagements include a variety of assessments to collect feedback and behavioral insights.
I also work with leadership teams to build cohesion and clarity, create healthy organizational cultures, improve workplace collaboration, and ultimately create high-performing teams.
My favorite place to be is in front of the classroom facilitating workshops on many different leadership topics – journey, legacy, communication, inclusion, impact, change, performance, engagement, collaboration, and the list goes on and on. If it’s about being a more effective leader, it’s a topic I’m interested in discussing.
There are a lot of great leadership experts and leadership philosophies out there. I’m honestly not so sure one is significantly different from the other. I do, however, believe that the connection and rapport that you build with those you are coaching is one of the most important aspects of being effective. I have been told I excel in building credibility and trust by being a confidant with empathy and compassion that make my clients feel comfortable opening up and working with me in a transparent way. My ability to actively listen, understand, connect and guide towards insightful solutions has proven to be very helpful with my individual coaching as well as with leadership teams and in the classroom.
My desire is to help as many leaders as possible be fully engaged with those who matter the most. This typically starts with a conversation to connect and explore.
