Inspiring Conversations with Muhammad Ahmed of Pages of Promise

Today we’d like to introduce you to Muhammad Ahmed.

Muhammad Ahmed

Hi Muhammad, We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The idea of Pages of Promise came to me in my first year at UTSA. I wrote about removing the language barrier within our communities for my Honors College thesis. My idea became my ambition when interning for the Office of Mayor Nirenberg. There, I witnessed the difficulty that the people of my hometown faced when asking for help from their leaders due to their lack of English literacy. I made a mission and asked like-minded individuals to join me as we helped our community grow stronger and more welcoming to all.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As in everything worth attaining, it takes a lot of hard work and an iron-strong will to make it happen. Luckily, I found the necessary ingredients in our officers, directors, and instructors, who have rallied together to construct a well-oiled machine. We could not have done it without their efforts and the generosity we received from our friends at the Center for Refugee Services, who graciously welcomed us and allowed a young nonprofit to thrive.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pages of Promise?
Pages of Promise is a nonprofit organization that works with asylum seekers, refugees, and all those who cannot understand English to provide English literacy classes. In addition, we provide knowledge of road signs and traffic etiquette to all our adults. We currently work with nearly 20 Afghani adult refugees and over 30 children, and we are now growing. We plan to expand to the Hispanic community within the next year by helping Spanish speakers become multilingual. What sets us apart is that we work with our students at their pace with a type of one-on-one teaching style. As a Pakistani-American, I understand the struggle of learning a new language and how frustrating it can be to not communicate with others. We establish personal relationships with our students to ensure a friendly, welcoming, and entertaining environment.
