Inspiring Conversations with Monica Smith of Bu Curls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Smith.

Hi Monica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a Salon owner and Stylist for 28+years and I was using a product line that had become difficult for me to access. With years of experience I knew just what the wavy, curly and coiled textures needed. So, I began my search in 2018 to find the right ingredients that worked on these textures, and then created my own line and launched BU Curls in 2019. As I was testing out various products and ingredients, it was very important that the product worked on all 3 texture groups and the line was simple and straightforward with a focus on what these textures needed no fluff, and of course, the ingredients had to be of good quality.

This is what makes BU Curls unique: 5 products that work on WAVY, CURLY & COILED textures. Yep, no more buying various product lines. You only need “1”… BU Curls.

My hope is that with every purchase every customer will fall in LOVE with BU Curls and feel the freedom to just BU with every product!

I am most proud that I created a 5 product line that works on all 3 textures.

I want readers to know that you can have many curly textures in one home and only use 1 product line.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been beautifully not straightforward is how I would explain it, with some speed bumps. For instance not being able to get my product that I had been using for years and having to pivot and figure out what I was going to do for my clients. Or having a huge learning curve about manufacturing and ordering larger quantities than I was used to. All of this played a part to where I am right now with Bu Curls. I now have a much better understanding with capital and capacity and what’s next for Bu Curl’s.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters is that curly people know that their texture is beautiful and that all they need to do is show their hair LOVE!

That is wether you choose to wear your hair wavy, curly, or coiled at work or play your hair is beautiful.

This is important because so many think their hair is hopeless, that their hair is not appropriate to wear out at work. And this is simply not true. It starts with building the confidence, to match with learning your texture and providing it with what it needs.
