Inspiring Conversations with Kadia Cohen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kadia Cohen.

Hi Kadia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
As a young girl born and raised in Jamaica, I always wanted to work for myself. The journey wasn’t as straightforward as I had hoped. I migrated to the United States from Jamaica in 2006 and started in the medical field. I later decided to attend Cosmetology School and work as a shampoo assistant.

While in school, I began building my clientele. I had my plan in place but God had a master plan. I took a leap of faith and opened a small salon with a roommate. Not long afterward, I outgrew that space and branched out on my own. Seven years ago is when my journey as a stylist began. I took continuing education course to perfect my craft.

On October 21, 2019, I took another leap of faith and opened up my first store-front salon. A few months later we were faced with a global pandemic. Even in spite of it all, I thank God that The Bandoo Salon & Spa is still thriving.

My goal for 2022 is expansion. I want to build a strong team of like-minded professionals and expand the reach of The Bandoo Salon & Spa. One day, I hope to build a business foundation for abused women and children.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When you’re building a business, sacrifices will be inevitable, especially in the beginning. Initially, I would miss out on my boys’ games or family outings due to my work schedule. Now I’m more flexible. My family is my motivation for greater, so I’m grateful that I can balance family and career.

Setbacks also come with the territory but I refuse to let that stop me. During the shutdown of 2020, I had to close the shop due to being a nonessential worker. Instead of letting that deter me, I chose to strategize and build during that time. Now I’m learning that there is no limit to what God can do in and through me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and I specialize in curly and natural hair. What sets me apart is my focus on scalp health, which ultimately gives rise to healthy, luscious locks. I believe that healthy hair is just as important as beautiful hair. To achieve this, I invest in quality products and equipment.

I am best known for amazing silk presses, natural hair updos, and scalp maintenance. Customer service remains at the core of everything we do at Bandoo Salon & Spa. We understand that our clients need that time and space to decompress so the atmosphere is intentionally set for relaxation.

Whether you’re looking for silk press, sew-in extension, dreadlocks, natural hair updo for all occasions, crochet, extensions, braids, color, high lights, wash & go, flat twists, or our new rodless perm smoothing system know that we have you covered.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I personally believe that it is only the grace and favor of God that has brought me to the point that I am at now. What excites me is the fact that this is only the beginning.
