Inspiring Conversations with Ellis Winstanley of El Arroyo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellis Winstanley.

Hi Ellis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Since 1975, El Arroyo has been serving up Tex-Mex with a side of laughs on our famous marquee sign that stands on the corner of West 5th and Campbell in Austin, Texas.

The Last Queso Stop Before a Bunch of Yoga Studios – over the years we’ve covered every food pun imaginable while never forgetting witty commentary on current events. We’re always happy to take sign submissions from customers and the internet!

We’ve been serving great Tex-Mex food in Austin for more than 25 years and we’ve loved every second of it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Well… covid but we turned limes into margaritas and helped launch margaritas to go in Texas, fire off the Texas Restaurant Relief Fund with the Texas Restaurant Association and Robert Earl Keen, and were able to be a force for good in the restaurant community.

We’ve been impressed with El Arroyo, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are known for our funny marquee sign that has sat in front of the restaurant in downtown Austin since the 80s.

We are most proud of our ability to bring joy to people’s day and make people laugh. We’d love our readers to know more about our gift line and restaurant.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Just listen, people like to talk and help.
