Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Griffin.
Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Twenty years ago, I paddled past this little camp and thought, wow, it would be so cool to own that someday; it is such a special location with the spring on one end and the river along the western boundary. Fast forward to 2020 and my brothers and I bought Arrowhead on the Nueces, an 8 unit resort on the Nueces River. We are on nearly 8 quiet acres, with private river access, and Old Faithful Spring Creek running along our Southern border.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of our biggest struggles is that the Nueces is the best kept secret in Texas. Many people know the Frio River, but hardly anybody knows about the Nueces. We are just one canyon over with crystal clear waters and beautiful wildlife.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Arrowhead on the Nueces?
What sets Arrowhead on the Nueces apart from other places to stay in Real County is our comfortable setting. Our places are nice in a comfortable way; we aren’t fancy–on purpose! When you are here, you can really relax and enjoy yourself. We like kids and pets! We encourage our guests to put down their phone, unplug, and get revived by nature.
I believe our river experience is superior among places to stay in Camp Wood; we have private river access and we don’t do day passes, so our guests have our little slice of heaven to themselves. We are underdeveloped and we like it that way! Our meadow is still open and full of birds, and our river is still structure-free and wild. We like that it feels like you have the place to yourself while you are here. We follow a “keep it wild” philosophy; we want to interfere in the nature around us as little as possible, so that when you are here, you get an authentic experience out here in the western frontier of the Texas Hill Country.
The Nueces River is a nature lovers paradise. We are not as shaded as the Frio, so we are not a good tubing river, which we like–no innertube parking lots on the Nueces! We are a kayak paddling, fishing, and birding river. Our night skies are spectacular as well.
We are also a great base camp to explore the many amazing natural and historic places in this area. Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz is practically in our backyard, and we are short, beautiful drives along the three sisters highway loop to the Devils Sinkhole in Rocksprings, Historic Fort Clark Springs in Brackettville, Frio Bat Cave in Concan, along with Kickapoo Caverns SNA, Garner State Park, Lost Maples SNA, and the new state parks currently under construction-Bear Creek and Silver Lake, There is great shopping and museums in Camp Wood, Leakey and Uvalde. So you can come have an action packed day, then a day of “il dolce far niente” watching the water go by while you sit in the Nueces River.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you’ve never visited Real County or the Nueces Canyon before, you should know that cell service is not great in a lot of places, so you might want to screenshot your directions, and our closest HEB is in Uvalde, 45 minutes away, so if you need anything fancy or organic, better stop there on your way in. In Camp Wood we have a wonderful small grocery store for basics, and a dollar store if you forget something critical. Canyon time is slower than the big city, so come on out, relax and enjoy your time in Nueces Canyon. We promise, once you visit, you will want to come back every chance you get.
