Hidden Gems: Meet Wendy Black of Footbridge Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Black. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Wendy Black

Wendy Black fostered dogs for many years and always enjoyed walking them through the King William neighborhood and across the footbridge on Johnson Street. One day, it struck her that the bridge itself was becoming symbolic. Around the time the dogs got the hang of their claws touching the metal surface of the bridge, they also forgot their desperate pasts and became ready to move into their happy futures. Shortly after this revelation, Wendy created a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and Footbridge Foundation was born. Over the last five years, Footbridge Foundation, along with the kind and dedicated help of donors, fosters, and volunteers, has saved the lives of thousands of dogs and cats. The organization is on track to rescue and adopt at least 450 animals this year alone. To fund their charitable animal rescue efforts, Footbridge Foundation relies solely on the much-needed donations of generous supporters. Donations directly help the animals in need and are used to help strays and foster with items such as low-cost spay/neuter surgery, X-rays, dental care, emergency care, surgeries for amputation, broken bones, deformities, hospice care, eye care, heartworm/Lyme disease tests for dogs, treatment for parasitic diseases, FIV/FeLV testing for adoptable cats, TNR trapper fees, dewormer and vaccinations, monthly flea and heartworm prevention, microchips, intake fees, transport costs, pet food, kitty litter, collars, tags, cones, leashes, harnesses, training treats, bowls, beds, crates, carriers, traps, puppy pads, formula, bottles, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, and more.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running a small business is challenging, whether it’s a nonprofit or for-profit business. It requires hard work and dedication. Our struggle is the constant need for us to help animals in our community. We are looking for ways to help more animals 24-7. Our minds never stop thinking of how to save one more dog or cat, and our hearts are frequently broken. We know we cannot save them all in this city, but we must keep trying.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us more about your business. next
Footbridge Foundation is a foster-based animal rescue in the King William area. Formed in 2017, we rescue cats and dogs and place about 500 animals a year into new homes. Our headquarters also has a surgery center that provides approximately 600 spay and neuter surgeries a year. This is a vital service to our community to help control San Antonio’s unfortunate stray animal epidemic. We are very proud that we have the support of our community and have been able to have our surgical center be the first of its kind in downtown San Antonio. Our supporters have continuously backed our mission to ensure that not only our cats and dogs are provided with spay-neuter surgery but also numerous community cats and other animals in our area have access to this important service. We can also provide specialty services and surgeries like heartworm treatment for dogs, entropion surgery, and enucleations. We aim to spread awareness of the importance of responsible pet ownership and spaying and neutering so that our city becomes a more humane place to live for all. We need more donors and foster families to help our mission progress. At the end of the year, we ask for your help to support us in reaching more people who can participate to help us save more animals.

How do you think about luck?
We all work hard here at Footbridge Foundation; that has made our business successful.
