Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Helmy.
Hi Sara, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Tribu in my early twenties as a recent college grad (Marketing degree from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi), fueled more by belief than by experience. I come from a hard-working immigrant family with risk-taking and entrepreneurship in their blood. I didn’t have a roadmap, but I had a strong entrepreneurial itch—and a deep belief in creativity, in people, and in the power of brands to truly connect. With some experience in SEO and digital, I set out to build something more than a standard marketing agency.
Shortly before this season of my life, my father passed away after a long and painful battle with cancer. I was reeling, trying to find strength as a human, to heal, and to make meaning out of that experience. One thing I understood deeply for the first time was that life is short—and that lesson became fuel. Because of it, I wasn’t afraid of failing. I was afraid of not trying. That moment flipped a common fear on its head for me and gave me the courage to go for it.
At the same time, digital marketing was just beginning to take hold, and San Antonio didn’t have any truly digital-first agencies yet. I believed that if we could combine strong branding and creative skill with emerging technologies, we’d be onto something tribe-worthy (!), so we gave it a go.
In the beginning, it was just a laptop, a free office in a manufacturing facility, a tiny bank balance, and a lot of grit. I can’t fail to mention an early tribe that somehow believed in this just as much as I did. I’m grateful for them to this day. We knocked on doors, pitched ideas, and poured everything we had into each relationship, cherishing every opportunity. We were scrappy, young, and resourceful—and over time, the work began to speak for itself. Tribe partners came on board, and a reputation formed.
Over the years, Tribu has grown into an award-winning creative agency known for bold design, sharp strategy, and brands that feel deeply human, clever, and brave. We’ve helped over 300 brands grow, many from the ground up. I’ve had the privilege of working with companies and people who inspire me—across industries, across borders—and building a tribe (that’s what we call our team) I’m deeply proud of.
My path hasn’t been conventional, but that’s part of what makes it work. I’ve learned to see things differently—and to trust that rebellion, when rooted in purpose, can build something lasting and transformative.
That’s how I got here. And I’m still building, learning, and growing every day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! What great and uncharted roads are ever smooth? Haha.
The struggles—many of which eventually became strength-forming blessings—were real.
When I started Tribu, I didn’t have years of leadership experience. I learned leadership on the job (alongside many other things). There were probably moments I thought I was a great leader, only to humbly learn that no one starts off great—you have to practice, drop your ego, develop deep (and sometimes painful) self-awareness, and surround yourself with other strong leaders to even have a shot. No one is “just born with it,” and leadership is something that can always improve. God bless everyone who tolerated me, believed in me, and followed me anyway. I also believe the learning never stops—I’m still at it every single day.
Our bank account in those early years was also razor-thin. Every hire or risk felt like it could make or break us. We bootstrapped from day one, and we still fund our own growth today. I’m oddly thankful for every single chair in our office—because I remember when buying one extra felt like a giant mistake we couldn’t afford to make.
We also had to learn the hard way just how critical a hiring process is. In the early days, we winged it—and learned, painfully, that there is no resource more powerful than simply working with good people. Getting hiring right is everything.
And finally, one of my greatest growth points has been learning boundaries. I started Tribu at 22, when I could burn the midnight oil whenever I needed to. Today, I’m a mom of two amazing toddlers. They’ve taught me that boundaries aren’t just important—they’re essential. Their presence forced me to cut the fat from my schedule, get more effective, and show up more fully—for them and for my team. Ironically, becoming a mom made me a better CEO: more grounded, more understanding, and more focused on what really matters.
As you know, we’re big fans of Tribu Creative. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Grit. There’s nothing more effective than simply never giving up. Where there is a will, there is a way.
If I could pick one more I’d pick Integrity. I’m a big believer in the mantra “truth sets you free” – honor your truth. Easier said than done. That requires a bravery in many moments.
To me, there is nothing more mighty than that duo. Grit and Integrity…it’s not easy, but it’s unbeatable.
