Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Anthony.
Hi Robin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the age of 40, I went to massage therapy school at St. Phillip’s College here in San Antonio. After getting my license in 2011, I worked for several business and the last company I stayed with for 9 years. It was an amazing place to work and received world-class therapeutic training. After the pandemic hit I decided to lose my pandemic weight gain and entered a fitness contest and won first prize! I then took that prize money and decided to change my life! At the age of 50, I invested my winnings in owning my own massage practice. After just a short few months I have gained a wonderful clientele from San Antonio and Helotes area. I am excited to see what the next decade will bring to me and my business.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to owning my own business was not smooth. At the same time of starting up, I was dealing with the grief of losing my brother in 2020 to heart disease and having to care for my mother who is disabled. I also had a family to take care of so I was very scared and was taking a huge lip of faith. I had gained a lot of confidence in my ability to be a good therapist but wasn’t so sure about being a businesswoman.
As you know, we’re big fans of Retama Massage Therapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My practice is devoted to deep tissue and therapeutic bodywork. Two words that are often interchangeable are massage and bodywork. Both, however, can be therapeutic to the body and mind. Three major benefits from massage are: increased circulation, decreased blood pressure and release of serotonin, the feel-good hormone. I help relieve pain associated with many conditions such as: sciatica, headaches and tendonitis. I also truly enjoy offering clients to come in to my massage space to be transported to the feeling of being in another dimension and completely relaxed. Often, people want to tune into their bodies and tune out the rest of the world and massage therapy is a wonderful experience for both practitioner and client when that transformative session occurs.
I love to listen to my clients and their concerns about their pain and stress level. I care about how they feel when they leave my office and want them to comeback. Each interaction I have with a client is unique and interesting and I love every day I get to work and do what I love.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
It can’t be said enough how much the pandemic has changed everything including massage therapy. I believe this one-on-one interaction is safe and I take every precaution to keep it that way. That said, massage therapy is gaining more credibility in the professional practitioner realm. Bodywork is the perfect complement to physical therapy and pain treatment management. I would love to see a world where a doctor could just as easily prescribe a massage for certain conditions just as easily as they prescribe medication. There is still research being doing on the physiological effects of massage. But, we already know that good, therapeutic level work is needed to make physical changes in the body. Respect. I see more respect coming for Licensed Massage Therapists.
