Hidden Gems: Meet Patricia and Carlos Magallanes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia and Carlos Magallanes.

Hi Patricia and Carlos, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We started Mayanshul one year ago in México. Mayanshul started from the need to offer authentic Mexican products with the challenge of being delicious and nutritious,  as a result of our trips to the southeast of Mexico, realizing the variety of Mexican gastronomy.

Mexican cuisine is an important element when we want to understand the traditions of Mexico and its culture. In 2010, Mexican cuisine was proclaimed by UNESCO an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

An important part of this recognition is due to the preservation and quality of its ancestral products such as those we sell in Mayanshul. Our commitment is to transcend that gastronomic richness to the United States and the entire world.

In fact, our brand name Mayanshul comes from the two-word phonetic composition: the inheritance of Mayan culture in Mexico and in the world; and Shul, which comes from the ancient word Xul having a meaning of spirit, magic, or deity.

In a free translation: “we want the spirit of the Mayan heritage to prevail through good food in Mexico and the world.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
First, we would like to talk about the challenges, because having a clear goal, the obstacles are reduced, they do not disappear but they give us reasons to achieve goals.

Some  more relevant challenges:

1) First of all,  get our brand recognized in the community of San Antonio. We want that when people hear about Mayanshul they associate it with delicious and healthy Mexican products.

2) That our clients fall in love with Mexico through the authentic and original flavors of Mexican culture at the same time they care for their health and nutritional values.

3) Focus on the market that values health and the environment.

We currently sell our products on Amazon. Our next goal is Mayanshul to be a recognized brand in high-end Mexican restaurants and all vegan option restaurants.

Obstacles:

1) Like any new entrepreneur, we do all the tasks.
2) Many people do not know how to distinguish a healthy Mexican product.
3) Not being still a positioned brand, sales are still slower.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
We are committed to promoting healthy, authentic Mexican food.

We work directly with small producers and artisan partners avoiding intermediation, revaluing the purchase of their products above the market, and offering 100% of the purchase in advance.

By working directly with our producer partners, we add to the challenge of empowering them to improve their quality of life and above all to keep traditions.
