Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Westcott.
Hi Marcy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
In my first career, I spent 20 years with American Honda Motor Company in Sales & Service management. I worked 70 hours a week in male-dominated, toxic work culture. There, I experienced firsthand, what stress and anxiety can do to one’s health personally and professionally. I developed high blood pressure, insomnia, digestive issues and took medication for anxiety.
After 20 years at that pace in that kind of environment, I experienced burnout and left my career. I started a successful small business but I realized I was still suffering from 20 years of accumulated stress. One day, a friend asked me to go to a yoga class with her, and that night I meditated for the first time. The doors blew open for me. It was the most profound experience I’d ever had. It felt as if 1000 pounds of weight had been lifted off of me. After two weeks of practicing every day, I began to experience beneficial changes to my well-being. This led me to hear the call to teach.
I pursued training and became a certified meditation and mindfulness teacher. I then trained and received an advanced certification to train mindfulness in the workplace. I now dedicate myself to helping others develop a personal meditation practice and train businesses and organizations to adopt mindfulness practices for the workplace to improve company culture and employee well-being. It is my mission to help end suffering personally and professionally.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was difficult to start and run a small business while dealing with the accumulation of stress. Once I discovered meditation and began a serious practice, it was challenging for many people I knew to embrace the idea of meditation and how it was effecting positive change in me.
There was also the situation of trying to juggle being a business owner with the rigors and demands of getting my training. I ran my business during the day and then, for 14 months, spent late nights and every weekend studying to obtain my certification. I am blessed to have a husband who stood by and supported me through the journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Still State Meditation & Mindfulness Instruction. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I started my Meditation & Mindfulness professional practice to help others end suffering personally and professionally. I bring personal experience to what it’s like to experience and overcome stress, anxiety, and burnout. On a personal level, I can help someone bring more peace, harmony, and fulfillment into their lives. Professionally, I can bring my experience and expertise to businesses to help enhance employee well-being and enhance workplace culture.
I specialize in enabling people who may be skeptical about meditation and mindfulness to embrace the multitude of benefits they have to offer. I take a very different approach by teaching and training meditation and mindfulness in a very straightforward and secular way. What sets me apart is a teaching style that makes these practices accessible to anyone and is what I am most proud of.
I offer a variety of ways to work together through private and group classes, courses, workshops, and retreats. I work with individuals, busy professionals, businesses, and organizations. I welcome opportunities to speak to groups. I will be announcing even more new and exciting ways to work together in early 2022.
My brand reflects that there is a place inside all of us where we can go to heal and empower ourselves through the miracles of meditation and mindfulness.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I can’t give enough credit to my husband for his understanding and support. He sacrificed nights and weekends together for more than a year during my training.
I have had a solid core of close friends who have been in my front row cheering me on and encouraging me when others joked or expressed cynicism about my desire to teach. I have been so fortunate to work with individuals who embraced their desire to improve their lives and forward-thinking business clients who understand the importance of employee well-being and empowerment.
I have had the enormous good fortune to work with coaches who have helped me position myself to succeed as an entrepreneur. They have been instrumental to my success.
I am most grateful to have found my teacher Sarah McLean and the program at the McLean Meditation Institute providing me with the teachings and training that most supported my beliefs and goals. This prepared me with world-class training to step onto the teacher’s path with the necessary credentials and confidence to effect change in the world.
