Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Gorman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
People will often ask me how long have you been an artist? I’d say my earliest memories were watching my Mom sewing while I sat on the floor looking up at as she did. It was so comforting to me listening to the hum of her sewing machine and watching those small snips of the threads she would cut as she sewed.
In my early years, I had such a big imagination and often wandered off scaring her half to death out on an adventure on my bike or in the backyard. Lovingly, she would just say that I was her “uniquely different kid” and encouraged me to keep that creative spark going while I spent more time in my room writing short stories and drawing.
During those times I really cultivated my artistic abilities by visualizing what I wanted to say in art. Especially all through middle and high school where my art teachers saw a spark in me and spent much time drawing and just hanging out after school. Just having fun creating art together.
In High school, after I received an art scholarship I decided to take another path and obtained a degree in Early Childhood Education. Then, worked in insurance for 10 years. There was always a stir in my heart for art, when a life event changed everything for me.
I had a house fire where my dog and cat passed and my home was unlivable. I do believe in dealing with the stress of the events that happened that year and grieving the loss of my fur babies, it brought a new inspiration in art where I created close to 30 large fabric wall hangings in the evenings after I came home from work. They began pouring out of me in a rush and found comfort in creating them.
One day, I noticed one by one there were missing. I thought to myself, I know I just finished this one or that, where could they be? Well, my sister started showing them to art galleries and that is when I had my first gallery show that lasted a month. Shortly after, my works got into more shows and received national exposure on HGTV. Today, I continue to share my works on social media, in art shows, exhibitions and by custom works around the world.
Once I have visualized this design, I transfer it to fabric and continue to develop and refine the sketches in mind until various fabric textures, colors, and designs practically jump out at me and I am able to bring to life the realization of my creative vision.
As I continue my journey creating fabric art, I continue to spread my wings, expand and try new concepts as a multi-media artist. There is so much more to come as my mind continues to see and explore new mediums, new ideas, and move towards new horizons.
You can see my works in the San Antonio area at the River Art Group at La Villita in San Antonio, Carriage House Gallery in Boerne TX.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say I’m not sure if it’s a smooth or hard road only because it’s been my journey to just keep going. With setbacks I’ve had, I’ve learned, and with those wonderful happy times, I’m so thankful, so it’s are all a part of it. I do sure appreciate the people who enjoy and support what I do though. It makes it easier to find where my work is appreciated.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a professional artist since 2001 well versed in many mediums. I specialize in textile art where I’m inspired by nature’s beauty. I enjoy how nature has so much to show us to live a quality life and to stay thankful in the life’s moments that happen. So, that is why I enjoy creating all original art. Each piece has a story to it that isn’t replicated as it happened in the moment. I also create custom works for people who enjoy surrounding their homes with color and a unique style of beauty that fabrics bring.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d like to say thank you for taking the time to know more about what is created in love around the studio. Art is a passion and joy that is ever-evolving. My main goal is to bring more beauty into the world, making it a little better than when I came into it. By doing that, I believe it will benefit us all for generations to come. So feel free to join me on this artistic journey. It will be fun. I’m always up for a good adventure. Makes for great art!
