Hidden Gems: Meet Jaime Luna of State Farm-Jaime Luna Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Luna. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Jaime Luna has baseball to thank for much of his success, both personally and professionally. A passion for hits catches, and runs have led him to some of the best moments in his life. It’s also led him to the most disappointment he’s ever felt.

As a young boy growing up with a single mom Luna dreamed of leaving his hometown of El Paso and playing baseball in a city like Los Angeles. He came close. After graduating college, Luna played for a few minor league teams across the country and in Mexico, including his own hometown team, the El Paso Diablos. However, as bigger prospects joined the spring training camp, Luna got released. He was 23 – his window to play pro ball was closing.

“I knew that the disappointment I felt in that moment would be greater than anything else I’d face in my life,” Luna said. As a result, Luna a no-regret, why-not-like attitude-filled Luna’s spirit and mind.

Luna, who holds a degree in business with a focus in marketing realized that baseball was very business-like. It is a game of stats, according to Luna. So, instead of chasing sliders on the field, Luna decided to switch things up ad focus on the fastball in his life – sales, something Luna knew he could hit out the park.

Luna’s first real love for sales came with working for Spectrum Athletic Clubs. He approached selling gym memberships just like he approached his baseball career. He hustled. He showed up early and stayed late. Luna found he enjoyed the daily grind and as a result took athletic clubs on the brink of disaster to success. He crushed sales numbers.

A few years later a friend approached Luna about going into the business of insurance. “Honestly, at first, I didn’t think I was the insurance type,” Luna said. However, an opportunity to run his business with his own style beckoned Luna. “I realized that running my own State Farm Insurance Office was how I could leave a legacy in the city that I love and to the people whom I love.

A legacy is something that has always been important to Luna. “I didn’t have much growing up,” Luna recalled Luna. “I was the first person to graduate from college in my family,” Luna says throughout his life he has had the drive to outwork anyone, a trait he believes he got from his mom.

In just over ten years with State Farm, Luna has earned several top awards and has consistently stayed in the top 5% of the company. In 2019, Luna was one of 2 agents in San Antonio to be awarded a second office. In 2021 Luna expanded his insurance service into several other states outside of Texas.

Luna credits much of his business success to being able to brand himself uniquely among a company and industry where agents are a dime a dozen. Four years ago, Luna created a side brand called LunaNation. He developed Facebook and Instagram platforms serving up his audience with life and business motivation, how-to tips, helpful information, baseball and stories of fatherhood, and even a little comedy here and there. The creation of a sideband has awarded Luna regular press and media appearances and speaking engagements. Luna also offers business and sales coaching.

A drive for success coupled with a love for family and helping others led Luna to launch something even more powerful than a second insurance office, too. When he least expected, Luna created philanthropy for fathers fighting cancer, following the diagnosis of his uncle, in 2014. Watching the rock of his extended family suffer, along with the accumulation of medical bills, Luna once again stepped up to the plate.

Luna, along with business contacts, friends, and family created Putting 4 Pops, a now-annual golf tournament benefitting dads who are fighting cancer. Recently the non-profit held its 6th tournament raising over 30-thousand dollars.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
More than once disaster has struck close to home, too, for this insurance agent. In 2019, Luna’s uncle was one of 23 people who died after a gunman opened fire inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Feeling the sudden and tremendous loss of his uncle whose life policy he insured, Luna arrived at the scene as both a grieving nephew and agent.

“I had to switch hats immediately in order to help my uncle’s family as I do with all my customers. I really didn’t have time to process what had happened. My first priority was doing all I could in the wake of the tragedy to help expedite the claim. Financial security cannot take the place of someone of course, but, it can relieve some of the burdens associated with losing someone expectedly as we did my uncle.”

Luna found himself on the receiving end of a claim more recently too. During the 2021 snowstorm that left San Antonio residents without power and water for weeks, Jaime Luna’s own home suffered a casualty when a frozen pipe burst, leaving a gaping hole in his family’s dining room ceiling. “Once again I was Jaime Luna’s insurance agent as well as family man and caretaker of my family,” Luna says it reminded him how we are all vulnerable to natural and unexpected disasters.

“ I don’t stay satisfied. When it comes to insurance, my focus is the customer – always. I focus on education. Risk Management. Our clients lean towards our expertise. So I’m much more a risk advisor than simply an insurance salesman” said Luna.

Luna also says he’s competitive. He had to be in the game of baseball and life, knowing opportunity would only come to him with grit and hard work. “I have many at-bats left ahead of me, said Luna.” While he doesn’t know what his next inning will look like, Luna says he’ll be ready.
