Hidden Gems: Meet Deidra Hogan of Deidramatik

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidra Hogan.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started doing hair when I was seven. I remember going to school not liking how my grandmother at the time was doing my hair. I mean multiple ponytails with braids or twists just not what I wanted. So I would take it down as soon as I got to school and do it how I wanted it. I learned to braid by undoing and redoing the styles I had. At first it was hard, there were lots of days I got told to just leave my hair alone but I just always had a vision on how I wanted to look. Eventually she came around and helped me grow as a braider. I got a lot of practice over the years with family and friends, a lot of them are current clients of mine.

I used to watch America’s Next Top Model with my mom. She thought I was more interested in modeling; I liked the behind the scenes work, the makeovers, and the attention to hair that could transform a person’s appearance. I wanted to create those priceless reactions, give that feeling of restored confidence after an entire new look or even just polishing up their current look.

I began beauty school straight out of high school. I dropped out, went to college to become a teacher, traveled; and tried my hand in the medical field. Hair was always something I’ve done no matter what else in my life I was doing.

I went back to hair school in Nov of 2020, graduated June 2021. I stepped out on faith and opened my business to the public on September 6, 2021. Now, being a little over a year in business, I think this was the best thing I’ve ever done.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve definitely had challenges and setbacks trying to get this business going. Some personal, some health issues and some just growing pains that come with starting a business. The main struggle for me has been the stress that comes with everything. Managing my day-to-day life, the business and constantly learning new concepts or making plans to grow my companies; it sometimes seems like there are not enough hours in the day. My faith keeps me grounded, creating and achieving my goals keeps me moving forward.

My focus above all the obstacles is continuing to grow as a person and businesswoman. Being your own boss has its challenges, just as anything else in this life. The key is to keep moving  forward and keep going. When I’m sad, sick, or just don’t feel like it I can’t stop going. I have to remind myself why I started and that generally reignites that fire. I have had days where I’m just like, “I can’t do it!” On those days I have to retreat and regroup, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I have to speak the same greatness into myself that I do my clients, then I’m back at it like I never left. In the end it’s all soo worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Deidramatik?
