Hi Courtnay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a cat and animal lover my entire life. My very first cat was the kind of companion most people only dream of having. I got her when I was five years old, and she stayed by my side until I was a sophomore in college. She was my best friend as we moved from place to place over the years. After experiencing that kind of bond, I found myself constantly searching for another cat with the same temperament and heart.
She was incredibly loving and patient—I could carry her on my shoulders, cradle her in my lap like a child, and she would always be right by my side. After realizing I might never find another cat quite like her, I knew that one day I wanted to become a breeder. My goal would be to raise kittens with the same amazing personality and connection I had with my first cat.
Becoming a breeder actually happened sooner than I expected. Not long after I brought home what I thought was my dream kitten, she tragically passed away from sudden congestive heart failure. I was devastated. Even though I was offered a replacement, the hole in my heart was immeasurable.
Shortly after that loss, I discovered a relatively new and rare breed—the Highlander. I was immediately captivated by their unique features like curled ears and bobtails, but even more so by the playful, dog-like personalities I kept reading about. I soon brought home my first Highlander kitten, and the rest was history. I knew I had found the breed I wanted to begin with.
Losing my dream kitten was a painful reminder that life is short. Sometimes the best time to start something meaningful is now—not someday. So I took the leap. Instead of waiting until retirement, I began building my breeding program right away. I haven’t looked back.
From designing my website to carefully selecting my breeding cats and attending cat shows to learn as much as I can, I’ve gone all-in. I’m on a mission not only to raise awareness about these incredible cats, but also to keep learning and improving as I prepare for my first litter. I know that once the kittens arrive, my journey will truly begin.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle was loosing my dream kitty, but she is actually the one who lead me to pursue breeding now versus later on down the road.

How do you think about luck?
I’ve always considered myself fortunate in both life and business. I genuinely believe that everything is always working out for me—and so far, it has. I trust that everything happens for a reason. While losing my dream kitten was heartbreaking, that loss ultimately led me to discover the breed I was meant to build my cattery around: the magnificent Highlander.
