Hi Christina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
From aspiring television news reporter to award-winning Executive & Leadership Coach for high-achieving Women of Color/Latina CEOs, my journey has been fueled by a passion for media, online visibility, and empowering women of color. I’m Christina Olivarez and I was born and raised on the US/Mexico Border in South Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. (Puro 956!)
While I once dreamed of being a reporter on Good Morning America or hosting the red carpet for E!, I realized that my impact would be far greater as a leader in the digital space. I was eager to launch my career as a reporter in San Antonio, TX. However, every time I would interview for a position I was often told that I didn’t look the part, would have to change my look, or worse, a FLAT OUT NO!
My deep love for the internet began back in the AOL era, where I learned how to build an online personal brand and community. This passion for digital media eventually led me to launch The Social Butterfly Gal in 2015, a blog-turned-social media management company that served as the foundation for my journey into entrepreneurship. Working with clients to manage their social media, create content strategies, and organize private influencer events gave me a front-row seat to how impactful a strong digital presence can be. This passion helped me to retire from my social media management days and shift into Business Coaching & Leadership Development for Minority Women. I now focus on Personal Branding and Online Visibility through Executive Coaching for Women of Color.
I realized I was often the only Latina in the room during a networking event. This made me recognize the gaps and disparities in business education and resources available for minority businesswomen. In 2018, I launched Hustle + Socialize, an annual conference dedicated to elevating the voices and business acumen of Latinas and women of color. The rest is history! In 2023, I brought Hustle + Socialize under the SBG brand, and launched the core pillars of my brand: conference, coaching, and speaking.
At the heart of my work, I help women of color who are already playing at a high level—whether they’re CEOs scaling new heights, corporate leaders ready for more visibility, or entrepreneurs who want to position themselves as authorities in their industries. Through executive coaching, high-impact speaking, and my signature conference, I equip them with the strategy, leadership skills, and brand positioning they need to amplify their voice & influence, attract high-value opportunities, and step into their next level of authority.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had many pivots in the last decade in business, including: shifting and retiring several of my offers to better align with the direction of my vision, ending a business partnership, acquiring that business 100%, and rebranding to align both arms of my business under one roof, financial & funding challenges and quite often, having to work 10 times harder to prove my worth.
Entrepreneurship and owning and operating a company is never easy and not a smooth road. You have to actively choose this life daily. For me, I can’t see any other path than entrepreneurship which means I have to have so much discipline when the highs and high and the lows and low.
