Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Escobar.
Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and raised in the great Rio Grande Valley, TX. I came to San Antonio for college as soon as I could! I’ve been in thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales since I needed to furnish my first apartment while a student at UTSA. I’ve always had an eye for unique and vintage items. Years before I started Silver Sirena, I would be in thrift stores and see some really cool stuff, not my size or style, and I couldn’t help but think, “I could probably sell that.” I’ve worked in various retail management positions, love vintage and fashion, so starting my own vintage business seemed like a natural extension.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any small business owner will ever admit this being a smooth road! It has definitely been a learning experience. Learning how to handle very aspect of my little business- photography, social media management, customer service, shipping clerk, accounting, inventory organization, etc.- has been a challenge, but I’ve loved every step of it! Then of course COVID-19 began and all small businesses felt that. Mine was no exception. It definitely slowed down for a while. Things are getting back to normal now, and people are treating themselves again.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Silver Sirena is an online collection curated with a vintage and unique items across various selling platforms like Poshmark, Mercari, and Etsy. Silver Sirena aims to make vintage fashion and décor sustainable, affordable and accessible for everyone. My available listings are a curated mix of classic basics and vintage pieces, meant to be mixed and matched for unique looks, I love accessories and how they can transform an outfit. A great belt or hat can totally pull it all together! Fun accessories, both vintage and contemporary, are definitely my best sellers and my favorite to hunt for. I work hard to keep my costs down so I can offer cool stuff for a cool price. I’m always open to offers and offer a bundle discount. I’ve been frustrated by inflated prices on amazing vintage pieces and don’t want my customers to feel left out like that. I want to make you look good for cheap! No shame in that. I’m so happy that vendor markets and pop ups are back on after everything lately. Keep an eye on my Instagram for future pop up events. I love to host great sales and deep discounts when I get to do a pop up. I’ve really missed doing those events and getting to met my customers face to face. Customers can also feel good shopping a Latina owned business and helping save items from the landfill! It is amazing to be able to save these items and give them a second (or third!) life.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, so all my favorite childhood memories involve South Padre Island with my family and friends. S0 many summers and holidays spent on my dear island playing in the surf or enjoying the local restaurants. I’ve been on the beach since I was a baby! Even the name Silver Sirena came from my love for the beach. (Sirena meaning mermaid in Spanish.)
