Exploring Life & Business with Terri Rehkopf of Ippodaro Natural Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terri Rehkopf.

Terri Rehkopf

Hi, Terri; having you on the platform is an honor. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
At 19, I was pregnant with her son, who is now 17 years old. She started cosmetology school and then graduated after 1 year. She then helps run and learn all the business side of the salon through her mom. As soon as I graduated, I took advanced training courses in London at Vidal Sassoon. I took many classes and worked as an apprentice in the Vidal Sassoon salon. After being around other stylists who have been in the hairdressing field, I noticed that some of the stylists had to stop doing services because of their health being exposed to toxic hair products for such long periods. I also noticed that many hairstylists’ hands and skin had contact dermatitis permanently on their hands and arms. When I noticed this, that was when my passion ignited to having a salon that is cleaner in product choices, where we can also help the environment by having a sustainable salon where 90% of our trash goes back into recycling. Even human hair! I am contacting other stylists to help educate them on holistic hair salons. From teaching what ingredients mean in hair products to understanding the scalp to help navigate through why there may be hair loss, dandruff, and psoriasis, knowing this information helps us to navigate you to the right shampoos, hair color, all hair products all to prevent scalp irritations. I started doing hair as soon as I graduated; I started as a receptionist, then as an apprentice, stylist, and business owner. The first year was all about the quality of service we can bring to people. Then, in the 2nd year, I started to take on clients; this is where all the experience kicked in. By year 4, I decided to follow my passion and calling to open a business. Building the guest list for the salon was achieved, but now, we need to build a team. My next challenge was that it took about 5 solid years of being in business to reach the point where I had built a great team. It took a lot of lessons and hurdles, but great patience and not being afraid to try different approaches helped. I learned that you have to build a great culture around your team and environment where we all work together. The best part is that we all want to strive for the same vision of bringing beauty naturally. I love to teach and help other stylists fuel their passion and continue to be the best hair healer. I aim to expand and reach more people who want to understand better hair products and what is good and not good. To educate stylists to help their guests behind their chairs.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My struggle was building a team that all fit to work together for the same goal in mind. It took a lot of trial and error to pick the right fit. COVID lock, we got super creative and survived, still serving our guests the struggle of inflation, but not looking at it from that viewpoint, more so working even harder in customer service to help people feel at ease with some relaxation at the salon.
