Exploring Life & Business with Salma Reyes of Travel Guru Destinations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salma Reyes.

Hi Salma, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey as a first-generation entrepreneur began when my family immigrated from Mexico to San Antonio. Navigating a school where no one initially spoke Spanish forced me to master English as my second language, a challenge that sparked a lifelong desire to help others bridge cultural gaps and step into the unknown. I carried this momentum through MacArthur High School, graduating with honors and securing a full Terry Foundation scholarship to UTSA. During my undergraduate career, I maximized my education by completing five study abroad programs in Italy, China, Spain, Japan, and France. These global classrooms provided the blueprint for Travel Guru Destinations, proving that a background rooted in adaptation is the perfect foundation for a life as a global citizen.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to full-time entrepreneurship was not a linear path; it required walking away from the security of a corporate role at Rackspace to bet on my own vision. This leap of faith led to transformative digital nomad years living across Latin America with my husband and our dog, Brodie. After realizing our own travel dreams, I felt a deep calling to help other Latinos navigate the same path and explore the world with confidence. I set out to demystify international travel for our community because I firmly believe that if I can do it, they can do it too. Balancing a concierge service and managing industry needs has been a constant rollercoaster, and the journey has served as a masterclass in adaptability. Over time, I’ve built a strong Travel Guru brand to lead by example and make global adventures accessible to all.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Travel Guru Destinations?
Travel Guru Destinations is a consultancy founded on the belief that travel is an essential investment in personal growth and self-discovery. Beyond curating custom itineraries and managing reservations for transport, hotels, and bucket-list experiences, I am committed to fostering cultural exploration and combating overtourism. I also advocate for “lesser-known gems”—including my upcoming journeys to Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia—to offer my clients authentic destinations far from crowded hotspots. As a walking representation of my brand, I provide expert recommendations vetted through first-hand experience in 47 countries. I take pride in helping travelers maximize their time “elsewhere” by eliminating the stress of research, ensuring every journey is enriching and deeply personalized.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My success is a collective achievement, fueled by the support of a community that believes in the power of travel. I’ve recently expanded the global reach by partnering with a company to offer premium guided group options for solo travelers and by incorporating specialized destination wedding guest services. This growth has allowed me to hire additional talent, ensuring our signature standard of service remains consistent as we evolve. I’m also grateful to my husband, whose partnership is the foundation of our business and travel goals. And finally, the heart of this venture remains my clients; their referrals, repeat journeys, and word-of-mouth advocacy are the true roots of our continued success.
