Exploring Life & Business with Othon Welsh of Melody’s Pet Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Othon Welsh.

Hi Othon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raise in Monterrey, Mexico, with 4 siblings my family, 2 sisters Mima and Analee my brother Hernan. My parents Othon G Welsh-Lozano and Irma Luz Martinez-Elizondo, they have been married 56 plus years. I grew up going with my dad every once a while to his office, he is a civil engineer, was business partner with his cousin and best friends all of them entrepreneurs civil engineers working on public and private projects. I remember going to some of the projects and always wanted to climb to the machinery specially bulldozers and excavators, seeing how operators were able to move dirt, dig holes and everything they were doing with the equipment looked so big and felt so powerful, it was fun most of the time. Also going to my dads office, watching him stepping into meetings, interacting with employees and lots of the time on his 2 way radio either in his car or his office and back to his office taking phone calls. When I was in college I started my own business with Francisco being my best friend and Ramiro the one who invited us to start a sign business with him, it wasn’t easy at all, fun at the beginning while starting the entrepreneur stage as I always had seen my dad, plus being part of a new start up business, looking for the right spot to rent for our shop, searching for equipment to invest on, going through the legal and accounting paperwork and hiring employees to start with our first entity Imagen Vision SA de CV back in 1995, for then to open a second entity with Francisco a Japanese restaurant Kansei, as we were both sushi lovers as well as our girlfriends back then now our wives. Lastly open Mi Querido Pablo cocina and bar also with my business partner FM, this being our last project together, giving us some business experience and by the end of 1998 taking separate paths, Francisco is a very respected, successful and well known entrepreneur back in Monterrey with his Real Estate and Development business. I started working for my dad in his construction and Real Estate business and partnered with family members to continue some Real Estate projects back in Monterrey and taking the step to invest in San Antonio October 1st, 2011 for then to move with my family to San Antonio January 2012.
I’ve been married 25 years with my lovely wife Sulamit (Suly) Galvan.
We are happily blessed with 4 amazing children, Suly, Alissa, Othon Gerardo and Isaac. They are all so different like the fingers of my hand but so united as great and lovely siblings always looking after each other. we moved to San Antonio in 2012, been going back and forth to Monterrey for work, family business and also to visit our family and friends. Moved to San Antonio for security reasons and a new business project in the north San Antonio area, similar to my business in Monterrey, Residential and Commercial Real Estate and construction business. Invested with my siblings and brother in-law, my sister Mima and I as part of this new business project were the ones who moved to San Antonio and managed our business, she stayed until mid 2014 since our first project had ended and she and her family decided to go back to Monterrey, that was a big hit for me and my family and completely big decision deciding to stay in San Antonio with a completely new business and family project.
Being invested already in some residential and commercial Real Estate, search for new projects took me to invest in some health business while looking for some other real estate opportunities to invest and continue business growth in San Antonio area, the love of my children with their flurry pup Coco, their 2 turtles Thor and Tuga plus the love they alway give to any pet they have there hands on, enjoying the time spent at San Antonio Zoo, that’s been growing and updating every year, there’s always something new at the Zoo, this were some of the reasons that made me invest at Melody’s Pet Ranch, while I still was investing in the property buying the land and having this great opportunity to continue Melody’s business open with its regular clients , some on their second generation or even 3rd generation and the new clients, its been so satisfying seeing my children getting involved when they can and being part of this business.
Keeping me busy and happy knowing we are making our clients happy when they board their pets with us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a interesting, different than expected kind of a learning process, moving to a different country, so close, knowing San Antonio as a tourist usually visiting with family on vacation to shop, for fun and to get away from home in a safe, secure and relaxing place, even there’s lots of things in common, many people from Monterrey that visit San Antonio for the same purpose, pleasure, study a broad, doctors appointment, health treatment, business, visit family and friends, theme parks, golf, outdoor recreation or own a second home.
Being away from family and close family was the toughest part, I was planning on moving to San Antonio for 4 – 5 years and back to Monterrey, the immigration process changed my plans and kept me longer than what I had planned and in the mean time kept me doing business and looking for more opportunities to keep going in the mean time my children continue with their education and keeping them here in San Antonio, growing and making their friends here too. I think the immigration process took us to a different direction, kept me longer than I thought and also has me invested at Melody’s Pet Ranch, the look for land in Bulverde area and the love for pets in my family is what made me decide to invest and continue Melody’s Pet Ranch open with the great personal who love being with animals, mostly dogs and cats, specially the experience and amazing staff member Teresa Baker, being the key and the most valued asset in our business. While I was preparing for an offer I needed to talk with personal making sure they will stay and continue working during transition and under new management, for me this was very important to decide on moving forward with the negotiation on acquiring the property and business, being able to have a smooth transition to keep business open and going for our employees and customers. Melody was also very helpful and professional during transition process, glad everything went as planned. we’ve added a software system, includes an app so our clients can have an easier process creating their pets profile, adding current vaccination records, creating reservations and many other options available, also creating our website www.melodyspetrtanch.com for current and new clients being able to find us while searching for a place to board their pets plus being able to see what our business offers, been doing some updates and will continue doing so, to keep business maintained as great as Melody always did so our clients keep coming to board with us in a safe, relaxing and happy place.

As you know, we’re big fans of Melody’s Pet Ranch. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
This interview and article is for Melody’s Pet Ranch.
Welsh Investments DBA Melody’s Pet Ranch is part of Welsh Holdings organization.
As I mentioned about how I got to invest at Melody’s Pet Ranch, the search on accuiring property in Bulverde area and the love from my children with animals got me to expand business into a pet (dogs and cats) boarding facility.
What brought me to San Antonio was investing in a real estate project, being part of it took me into other construction and development projects some residential real estate for then to end up with the real estate property were Melody’s Pet Ranch is part of.
So proud expanding business with Melody’s pet boarding, offering a home away from home kind of vacation for our guests (dogs and cats) while their owners are enjoying family and friends on vacation or something else and just want to board their pets for them to have an escape and good time with us.
We offer a quiet, safe and relaxing retreat for dogs all sizes, with our 3 indoor/outdoor climate control kennel buildings, offering easy listening music during the day and relaxing music during the night, giving each of our guests a nice comfortable experience.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is the achievement of a desired outcome, something Ive planned on since I started working in Monterrey, getting married back in 2000, for then to have our 4 children, moving into San Antonio and getting through every challenge that has been on my way, being part of successful moments with my love ones and some projects has keeping me moving forward and focusing to accomplish personal and professional projects in life.
