Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Deegan.
Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began martial arts training when I was around 7 years old. Due to moving around California, I got instruction wherever I could. In 2009, I began training in 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu. I’ve continued to train since. Several years ago I met Sifu Jeff Hughes of Iron Mantis Martial Arts. He told me about his new system that seamlessly blended the ancient art of 7 Star Mantis with the newer arts of Hawaiian Kempo and Brazilian Jiujitsu. I began training under the supervision of Sifu Hughes and attained my Coach certificate in Iron Mantis Martial Arts. I recently opened a school in Kerrville TX to teach and spread this style to the community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been smooth. I began first teaching in my garage. Then when I outgrew that, I began teaching at our other business location-Behavior Resource Center. Finally, I found an affordable location where I could establish the school. So far, the school has grown organically without much marketing. I’m still hoping for more students though!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Behavior Resource Center and Iron Mantis Martial Arts Academy ?
Our first business named Behavior Resource Center, is an applied behavior analysis clinic, where we work with children and adults with autism. Since establishing BRC, we have grown exponentially. This success paved the way for me to open my martial arts school named Iron Mantis Martial Arts Academy. At Iron Mantis Martial Arts, we seamlessly blend the ancient fighting style of Seven Star Praying Mantis kung fu, Hawaiian Kempo, and Jiujitsu. We also offer Yang Taijiquan and Qigong classes that promote health and wellness for the mind, body, and spirit.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love everything about the Texas Hill country! No complaints.
