Exploring Life & Business with Melody Hernandez of Motherhood Massage of San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Hernandez.

Melody Hernandez

Hi Melody, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story? How did you get to where you are today?
I went to college with intentions of playing volleyball and softball, not to chase a dream career. After four years of incredible athletic experience, I also found myself with a degree in Kinesiology and Sports Science and a minor in Athletic Training. While most graduates went to work for schools as teachers, coaches, and sports trainers, that was not my calling. I wanted to help people and facilitate healing physically. So I went on a path of discovery that took me from Texas to Florida and found personal training and massage therapy. For 10 years, I worked in South Florida as a licensed massage therapist and group fitness coach. I even returned to school for my Master’s in Nutrition and Dietetics. It was an excellent combination for me to help people through fitness, nutrition, and recovery; however, in 2014, the spa I worked for closed down, I lost my older brother, and I met my now husband. I felt nothing was left for me in Florida; all signs pointed back to Texas. After moving cities several times, trying multiple jobs, getting married, deciding to be a stay-at-home mom, and having two beautiful pregnancies and births, my husband encouraged me to find a career to help others have the same positive birthing experiences. With that sentiment, I became a birth doula. While each birthing experience I attended was amazing, I still felt like mothers needed more. This is when my love and passion for massage went full circle. Even after an 8-year hiatus, I felt I was meant to be a massage therapist. Except this time, I was going to work for myself and focus on women in their journey through motherhood. In 2022, I did just that, and Motherhood Massage of San Antonio was born!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being self-employed is a challenging road. Running a business now compared to 10 years ago is very different; online marketing, social media, and competition with corporate spas did not existed back then. Combine that with having two small children, maintaining a household, and finding time to care for myself. Well, life can get quite hectic. However, I was committed to this new career path, so I invested in a business course geared towards massage therapists that taught me the latest business strategies and mindset, among the most important in entrepreneurship.

Thanks for sharing that. Could you tell us more about your business?
As a licensed massage therapist, birth doula, and mother of two, my mission is simple: Support and care for women in all stages of motherhood. I was a massage therapist for 10 years (2004-2014) and changed careers several times before finding that my passion was connecting with and healing women with massage. I want women to feel honored and respected as their bodies change and to be truly supported and empowered from conception to menopause and everything in between that comes with motherhood. As one of only a handful of San Antonio’s experts in massage therapy for pregnancy, labor, and motherhood, my goal is to help women feel good, hurt less, and sleep better. I am proud that doctors, midwives, doulas, childbirth educators, and other birth professionals confidently refer their patients and clients to me.

Along with general pain management and relaxation, some of my specialties include fertility massage, infant massage instruction, prenatal and postpartum massage, and post-cosmetic surgery lymphatic drainage. I even offer belly casting as a unique gift or souvenir. The best part is the convenience of being a mobile massage therapist, where clients do not have to leave the comfort of home.

Let’s end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
Connection, comfort, and the result: one of the best feelings is knowing I made a difference in someone’s day-to-day living.
