Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Flores, LPC.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I graduated with my Bachelors in Psychology from UTSA back in 2007 and shortly after entered the Mental Health field where I gained extensive experience in Childhood Development and Residential Treatment care for children and teens. I then went on to attend Texas Wesleyan University to purse a Masters in Counseling. During this time I continued to work in the field working closely with parents and their children, providing them with Early Childhood Intervention services and Behavioral Intervention for school age children.
I eventually moved into my practicum and internship level where I began providing Counseling to adults, children and families as well as some time working in Sex Offender Treatment.
Once I graduated in 2013 and became licensed, I worked in Nursing Home settings providing Counseling that centered around end of life care and eventually landed for a few years working with children and families in Foster Care.
In 2017 I became a Mother and decided it was time to pursue Private Practice. After learning the ropes in a Group Practice, I eventually opened up my own practice in 2019 and have now been in business for 6 years this August.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not! When I first opened up my practice, it was 2019, right before the pandemic and I had just signed a lease and decorated my absolute dream office in a dream location. I ended up using it all of about three months because we were all then deep in the social distancing and quarantine era. I had to pivot and become a Virtual Telehealth practice and was not able to renew my lease.
There have been some financial struggles along the way as I transitioned into running my own business and getting a consistent flow of work. There have also been shifts in what my business looks like that have coincided with my own mental health and what I do or do not have capacity for at times. I’ve got to take care of myself before I can hold space for others.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Verve is a private Counseling practice based in San Antonio serving adults anywhere in Texas via Telehealth. I specialize in stress management, relational wellness and empowering individuals as they exit one stage of life and enter into another.
One of the unique aspects of my practice is that I am also a 200 hr Registered Yoga Teacher and Certified Ayurvedic Wellness Coach. I blend all three worlds and training to provide a very multi-dimensional way of working with people.
One of the things I am most proud of in terms of the work I do and how I run this practice is being a safe, inclusive and decolonized space. I work with so many amazing people from a variety of spiritual beliefs and practices, relationship structures and gender identities and I am honored to be safe space for them.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
This might be a different way of answering this type of question but for me, personally, what I feel success looks like is having the freedom and agency to design my day to day life centered around my family. We are a homeschooling family and very Community oriented, so having boundaries for my work hours, how many clients I take on and things of that nature to make sure there is also space for engaging in daily adventures with my kids, husband, friends and family is crucial. And I absolutely show up as the best Therapist I can possibly be for others when I honor these sacred values.
