Exploring Life & Business with James Garcia of Righteous Group, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Garcia.

James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my insurance career in 2004 as a catastrophe adjuster, helping people rebuild their lives after major losses. Many situations were tragic, and they deeply shaped my understanding of how fragile life truly is. That experience led me into health and life insurance, starting with New York Life, before eventually following the calling to build my own practice.

My purpose has always been to educate—helping individuals and families understand the importance of protecting what matters most, whether through life insurance, cancer coverage, or other essential forms of protection. For me, it has never been about earning a sale; it’s about ensuring people are informed and prepared for the unexpected.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After getting married, my wife and I dreamed big—planning our future and believing we were fully in control of how life would unfold. Two years later, we welcomed our son, unaware of any potential health issues. His birth brought a surprise none of us expected. After a week of uncertainty, we were told he had Jacobsen Syndrome, a rare chromosomal disorder caused by a deletion on the eleventh chromosome. At the time, there were only 76 known cases worldwide, and 75% of them were female. Suddenly, our lives changed forever.

We were scared, overwhelmed, and faced with the unknown. Professionals warned us that 80% of marriages with a special-needs child end in divorce. I responded by saying, “God doesn’t make mistakes—and we will not be part of that 80%.” Our faith became our foundation.

Our son has endured many surgeries, and there were several moments we nearly lost him. But through strong prayer, unwavering love, and a community lifting us up, we have witnessed the undeniable work of God. He continues to remind us that every life has purpose and that miracles are real.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
My view of risk taking has evolved over time. Early in my career as a catastrophe adjuster, I saw firsthand how quickly life can change. Those experiences taught me that risk isn’t theoretical—it’s real, personal, and often unpredictable. Instead of fearing risk, I learned to respect it, prepare for it, and help others do the same.

One of the biggest risks I ever took was leaving a stable corporate role at New York Life to start my own agency. On paper, it didn’t make sense—no guarantees, no safety net, and a young family to provide for. But I felt called to educate and protect people in a way that aligned with my values and faith. That decision eventually led to the creation of Righteous Group, LLC, and it has been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

My perspective on risk deepened even more when our son was born with Jacobsen Syndrome. Suddenly, risk wasn’t a business strategy—it was a daily reality. We faced uncertainty, surgeries, and outcomes no parent prepares for. That experience reminded me that control is an illusion, but faith, resilience, and community are real. It also affirmed my belief that God doesn’t make mistakes, and He equips us for every chapter.

So while I don’t consider myself a reckless risk-taker, I do believe in taking purposeful, prayerful risks—especially when they align with your mission, values, and calling. To me, risk isn’t something to avoid; it’s something to navigate with wisdom, preparation, and trust.
