Exploring Life & Business with GILBERTO PAIZ of Texas Hill Country Advisors

Today we’d like to introduce you to GILBERTO PAIZ.

Hi GILBERTO, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was finishing up a bachelor’s degree in general business studies at UTSA and was considering options for when I graduated. Sadly, my father in law passed away in 1997 at the age of 47. My mother in law inherited some life insurance money and needed help with what to do with it. Back then, your “google” was the yellow pages, so I helped her find a financial advisor with a big name outfit. The advisor helped her feel so much better about her future and actually had such an impact on me, that I decided I wanted to do what he was doing. I was already working for a small bank in San Antonio doing date processing work. I told them that once I graduated, I was going to quit and become a financial advisor. They told me not to quit since they were starting up their own investment program. I was their first employee in their new investment division! I got licensed in 1998 and began as a financial advisor working with that same small bank. After a merger, I moved to larger bank in 2001, then I was transferred to Kerrville in 2005 and I have been here ever since. In 2020, I decided I wanted more freedom and independence to help my clients they way I saw fit, so I branched out and started my own investment firm, Texas Hill Country Advisors, with my partner Andrew Gay.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing has ever been smooth for me! The challenges of working within different kinds of organizations, different personalities and every changing rules, regulations and economic times are just a few of the obstacles that have gotten in the way over the years, but each and every challenge has been a learning opportunity and prepared me for the future.

As you know, we’re big fans of Texas Hill Country Advisors. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We provide education and advice about investments, retirement planning and wealth management. We work closely with our clients to help them pursue their financial goals. We work with other professionals such as attorneys and CPA’s to make sure we help our clients grow, preserve and pass on their assets. We also produce our own podcast where we discuss the latest news that we feel is relevant to the general public so they can make more informed decisions about their own investments. There is so much information available now, that many times, people are not sure who to turn to for advice so we try our best to give factual, balanced and fair information. We are also very involved in our communities, we serve on several non-profit boards, city sponsored enterprises and we do our best to help make our community a better place for all!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Mentors are super important! I am proud to say that I have had, and continue to rely on, many good mentors in my life. It is difficult to find the “right” mentor, but it is so invaluable that you need to keep at it until you find one! The first mentor I had taught me everything I know about the investment business and I still use many of his sayings and teachings in my business today! The mentors in my life have guided me, taught me, helped me and motivated me to improve myself and be a better financial advisor.
