Today we’d like to introduce you to Edwin “Roddy” Koberg.
Hi Edwin “Roddy”, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from Texas A&M with a mechanical engineering degree in May of 2020. I started my first job in January 2021 as a field service engineer due to COVID hiring freezes. After about 10 months of 100% travel for work, I was offered a job in San Antonio by A.H. Beck Foundation Co, Inc. as the mechanical engineer for their fabrication shop. I took this position in November of 2021 and began working towards getting my Professional Engineer license. I passed the PE exam in November of 2024 and applied for my license after gaining 4 years of experience (as required for licensure) in June of 2025. Around this time I decided that I was ready for a jump out of my comfort zone and would start my own engineering firm. Koberg Engineering was registered and launched in late September of 2025. While still in a sort of start-up stage, I have gained several consistent clients while still helping A.H. Beck as they search for a new mechanical engineering.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggles along the way include the difficulty of engineering school (especially during COVID lock down and not being able to attend class), moving to new cities away from family and friends, studying for the PE exam for 6 months, and learning how to start a business and all the paperwork that goes with it.
The current struggle is finding a consistent work. I have several consistent clients, but their need for engineering services comes and goes. Cold calling/emailing/visiting has not had much luck yet. Google ads has worked well for me so far and word of mouth has also been helpful.
We’ve been impressed with Koberg Engineering PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Koberg Engineering is a mechanical engineering specializing firm professionally licensed by the state of Texas to provided stamped drawings or letters. I am the sole owner/operator engineer at my firm, meaning your experience will be 100% personal and human.
I specialize in 3D and 2D CAD (computer aided design), FEA and materials analysis, MEP design and inspection. I have been working in CAD software since I was 14 (2012). I have been designing and helping fabricate lifting devices, lift plans and rigging schedules since 2021.
I graduated from Texas A&M in 4 years with a GPA over 3.0 while working part time all 4 years as a mechanic at the local moped shop Scoots. I am a very hands on capable and knowledgeable engineer, not just book smart. My hobbies include working on cars, motorcycles, houses remodels, and electro-mechanical DIY projects.
Being in the start up stage, the pricing, speed, and quality of work from Koberg Engineering is unmatched. I am able to get to projects within a few hours of initial contact and have lower than average pricing for engineering firms. I am willing to help with projects anywhere in the state of Texas, even if that requires driving out to the project site. Anything you can think of as falling under mechanical engineering, I am willing to give an attempt.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I always excelled in math and science. My parents did not necessarily push me to engineering, but told me I would be good at it. I always loved Legos and building random construction equipment or space ships without using the instructions. I was born in Arkansas and we moved to Pennsylvania when I was 8 years old, then Mississippi at 11, then Houston, Texas when I was 17.
Between my dad getting me a dirt bike at 6 years old, and playing hockey while we lived in Pennsylvania, I became quite the adrenaline junky. Normal sports like baseball and basketball never really hit the spot again even though I was always one of the tallest in my class (ended up growing to 6′-7″). In high school I joined the engineering and robotics class at the school district’s career and technical center. Our team would go on to the national tournament for VEX Robotics two years in a row before I moved to Texas.
In high school I became a car enthusiast which eventually got me in with the Texas A&M Sports Car Club and drifting with River City Drift out of San Antonio. Most of my personal projects now are designing or modify whatever project car or motorcycle I got my hands on recently.
