Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Richardson.
Hi Briana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been interested in birth work but I wasn’t sure how or in what capacity.
I learned what a doula was in my sophomore year of college and I was very interested but it was a lot of work to add to my full college load. After college, I took a 200-hour yoga training in Las Vegas that made me rethink what I was doing with my life and what I really wanted to do.
My yoga training helped me reignite my passion for birth work and brought me back to being a doula. I learned that my yoga knowledge could also be integrated into my doula work. I was so excited to get started in this valuable and vital work but I wasn’t in a place that really felt like home.
After throughout research I decided to visit San Antonio to see if it was a place for me to settle down. Even though I had never been to San Antonio it immediately felt like home. I completed my Doula training and I am excited to get involved in my new home and community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles getting to this point was changing my mentality. I gave up a salary job with benefits to become an entrepreneur and work for myself.
I was worried about being able to support myself, how to get my business known by others, how to run a business, and what my work-life balance would be like. Another obstacle was finances I had to sacrifice a lot of things to be able to pay for all the training and move several states after I had already moved across the country less than two years ago.
Thanks to the support from my family and friends I was able to overcome both of these struggles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The idea of my business is to provide yoga and doula services to pregnant women, non-traditional families, and beginner yogis.
As a yoga doula, I offer all traditional doula services with the added bonus of as many or as few yoga classes or sessions as the client wants.
For the beginner yogis, I offer personalized private sessions for the clients’ goals and relatable yoga classes that build personal strength and confidence.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was very inquisitive and I loved to read and listen to music. My favorite books to read were fantasies, love stories, or books that were based on history or mythology. I always wanted to know why things worked the way they did or how they functioned.
So much so that my parents brought me a book called “The big book of telling me why.” I used to think I wanted to be a doctor because of my interest in the body and how things work I used to watch a show called my birth story which was just women giving birth.
After learning about the math and science requirements that it would take I thought I wanted to be a music teacher for a long time. I did end up becoming a teacher but not teaching music.
