Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Curl
Hi Audrey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always been a creative, driven person. In high school, I won numerous art awards, but when I went to college at the University of Texas in Austin, I decided to pursue a degree in Education. I enjoyed teaching, but my heart still longed for a creative outlet. I was an interior design junkie, before HGTV, and avidly read all the design magazines from Architectural Digest to Elle Decor. I read numerous books by famous designers of the time, Mario Buatta, Mark Hampton, Albert Hadley, and others. I knew that interior design was my passion and I wanted to obtain some formal education in the field. I had a five year old son at the time but decided it was now or never to move forward with my dream. I went back to school after 12 years, obtained a certificate in interior design, and reached my goal. Because I was a mother to a young child, I wanted to have the flexibility to take care of my son, so I started my own business! For many years, I worked from home, but currently have a design studio in Alamo Heights.
I have now been in business for 30 years! I adore my job and the wonderful clients, vendors, seamstresses, upholsterers, and numerous others, that I have worked with over the years. I am so glad that I decided to follow my dream.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was difficult to work from home, but that allowed me the flexibility that I needed to take care of my son. There is nothing like being on an important call and having barking dogs and a needy child in the background, but I wouldn’t have traded that to be in an office away from my son!
Interior design is my passion and profession and I work very hard to be successful, but because for several years I worked from home, I wasn’t always taken seriously and that was a struggle.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that San Antonio feels like a small community even though we are a very big city. I also like that our city is historic and has wonderful cultural influences and special traditions like Fiesta that bring the whole city together.
In addition, I am very excited about the food scene in San Antonio. The buzz started with the arrival of the Culinary Institute of America and all the restaurants in the Pearl and continues with the thrilling Michelin star recognition for Mixtli!
The thing that I like least about our city is I wish that we had more direct flights!!
