Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonja.
Hi Sonja, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
At the age of 10, I started living with my aunt and uncle who owned a successful print shop in Universal City, Texas. This is where I began to learn about the printing industry. Between 2016 – 2022, I started to teach myself how to screen print and then quickly moved to vinyl and sublimation printing. With everything I was teaching myself, I needed a beneficiary (since PWRHOWS was not completely established yet). My cousin, DJ AyyeR, had a brand that she was just starting with the underground music scene (Loud City Society), so I asked her if I could start making things for her like t-shirts, bandanas and hoodies. Of course, she said yes, and the items were featured at our first neighborhood clean up with the kids, local curated shows and as uniform items for the team we were attracting. In 2023, my skills became more valuable in the graphics and marketing departments, which really put PWRHOWS on the map.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but the challenges have played a big part in shaping what PWRHOWS is today. One of the biggest relatable obstacles is building a business while still navigating through real life. A lot has been built through trial and error. The biggest lesson has been learning that progress doesn’t always look like constant growth. Sometimes, progress is restructuring, learning what does and doesn’t work, saying no to the wrong opportunities and staying consistent when things aren’t moving as quickly as you hoped. PWRHOWS is still evolving and every day helps us become clearer about who we are, what we’re good at and type of company we ultimately want to build.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
PWRHOWS is a creative solutions company that uses print, design and digital tools to help businesses, organizations and entrepreneurs solve their real-world problems. We specialize in turning an idea or a need into something tangible and useful. Printing is a major part of what we do, but we don’t consider ourselves just a print company. We like to start with, “What are you trying to accomplish?” instead of “What do you want to order?” It’s helping someone take an idea they have in their head and turn it into something professional enough to put in front of customers, sponsors, employers and their community. What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the biggest shift will be the continued blending of physical and digital marketing. Print isn’t disappearing. It’s becoming smarter. A business card, sign, flyer, or direct mail piece won’t necessarily be the final destination; it will be the entry point into a larger experience. The advantage will belong to businesses that know how to use technology with intention. For PWRHOWS, these changes are exciting because they align with how we already think. We don’t believe the future is print vs digital. We believe it’s print + digital + strategy. Our goal is to continue finding ways to to connect those worlds and create practical tools that help businesses and communities communicate, operate and grow. Technology will continue to change the tools available to us. The part that won’t change is the need to solve a problem.
