Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Warner.
Hi Scott, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a preacher’s kid who grew up thinking he would go into the “family business” and be a minister as well. I started college as a ministry major and quickly changed my major to Communications. I have been a plastics salesman, a middle school teacher and a manager for a computer consulting company. Each one of those roles equipped me to be a minister when I was finally called into ministry at the age of 35. I spent 18 years in ministry in Austin as a Local Outreach Minister and an Executive Minister before moving to Kerrville in 2022 as a Lead Minister at the Kerrville Church of Christ. It was quite a change for my wife, Melissa and I! We both felt God’s leading to move to the Hill Country and to enjoy a slower pace of life and closer knit community. It has been a tremendous blessing to us to become a part of the lives of those who live and work in Kerr County. Since the flood of July 4th, 2025 I have been able to become even more a part of the community as we strive to heal together. The cooperation between Pastors and churches in Kerr County has been remarkable and I feel blessed to be able to serve along side other spiritual leaders.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a winding road for sure. I left Tyler, TX as a PK (Pastor’s Kid) and head off to college to become a Minister. While in college I changed my mind and my major. After graduating I had jobs in sales, education, and IT. All of them prepared me for my eventual calling into ministry at the age of 35. It was a dramatic and frightening feeling to follow God’s leading at that time and look for a role in ministry but I was blessed to join the staff of the church we were attending at the time, Westover Church in Austin. I spent 18 years in ministry there before moving to Kerrville in 2022. This past year at Kerrville Church of Christ has definitely been one of the most challenging of my life. The flood of 2o25 devastated our community and we have yet to really recover. Similar to the pandemic of 2020, I realized how those of us in ministry couldn’t possibly be prepared to lead during such devastating times. Even among to the great outpouring of resources, care and concern from all over the world follow the flood, there is a weight to caring for others. Our church was the recipient of so much money that was donated to relieve the suffering of those who lost lives and property during the flood, I was overwhelmed. Thankfully God has shown us so many unexpected ways that we can pour out His blessings on those who have been hurt. We still have a long way to go as a community before we are healed and healthy again.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the Senior Minister at the Kerrville Church of Christ. I know every pastor/minister believes their church is unique, and I do too! Our church has a partnership with an amazing organization called Arms of Hope. AOH provides single mothers with a safe a nurturing environment while they work to transform their lives. Because of that partnership, we get the blessing of having about 35 single mothers and their kids as a part of our congregation. God has positioned us to be the church home for so many who have experienced brokenness, abuse and even church trauma. I think I am most proud of the way our church family welcomes and embraces those who need healing mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I also serve on the board of the Christian Women’s Job Corp in Kerrville. The CWJC works to help women find their worth in Christ and to grow emotionally, spiritually, and professionally. The work I get to do with Arms of Hope and Christian Women’s Job Corp allows me to better minister to the people of my congregation and my community. It gives me great joy to spend time with those who are seeking the freedom that comes from a life lived in Christ.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Since the flood in 2025, our congregation has been blessed with a great deal of resources to be used in the relief of those who were affected. Our church building was the home to the First Responders Assistance Center (FRAC) for about 10 weeks right after the disaster. Therapists, counselors and chaplains from the state, county and city were made their home base in our building as it was the center for emotional, mental and spiritual care for those who worked so hard in the recovery of victims of the flood. Since that time, we have felt a calling to use our resources to provide Christian counseling, therapy and training for those who have been affected by the flood.
In addition, I am a part of the LTRG (Long Term Recovery Group) subgroup responsible for Emotional and Spiritual Care for our county. I am fortunate to serve with many Mental and Emotional care professionals as well as fellow Clergy to work for the recovery of our neighbors.
The relationships I have been blessed to build with other Pastors and congregations in Kerrville has been of great benefit to me, our church, and the community. We have committed to work in cooperation and not competition with each other. I believe we are honoring the prayer of Jesus in John 17:20-21 that believers “would be one”. In 2024, our congregation joined with 3 other Kerrville congregations to completely fund a Faith Build with Habitat for Humanity. Impact Christian Fellowship, Kerrville First United Methodist, Trinity Baptist and Kerrville Church of Christ joined in funding and in effort to build a home in Kerrville for a family in need. Cooperation like this has set us up to do even more together when tragedy struck in the flood of 2025. Our community has a long way to go before it is healed, but I have great faith that the work of believers, sacrificing together, will make a huge difference.
