Daily Inspiration: Meet Rick And Mary Morrow (Not Related To Each Other)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick And Mary Morrow (Not Related To Each Other).

Rick and Mary , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Replay was formed by five professionals to deliver a premier musical experience to corporate and private events, festivals, the best music venues, weddings, and audiences wanting to see top quality covers from their favorite artists. Mary, Greg, Gary, Michael, and Rick deliver “Original artist” quality performances with the multi-part vocals of the soaring harmonies and complex arrangements of progressive rock band Kansas and contemporary country stars like Lady A. Replay’s playlist includes classic rock, modern rock, contemporary country and popular music from the 60s to today. Replay delivers a high energy show that animates any event with compelling music, an exciting stage show, and professional sound and lights.

Bios:
Rick is Replay’s drummer and cofounder. His career highlights include leading a band which won a Miller Beer’s Rock to Riches award, drumming in this same band voted the best band in area, and opening for headliners including the Blues great, Albert King. Leveraging his musical talent and training, performance experience and business expertise, Rick’s first step was to complete the build-out of a professional grade recording and performance studio.
Mary, cofounder, is a professional singer and actress who tackles a variety of musical genres. She has been in a lead or featured role in over 25 shows in the San Antonio/Austin area between musical theater and opera, and has been a member of the San Antonio Mastersingers as a soprano for 15 years in which she has sung with Andrea Bocelli on a couple of occasions, and toured Europe. Mary also enjoys playing instruments, adding violin, saxophone and keyboard to Replay’s shows. On a fun note, she won 1st place at Hollywood Studio’s American Idol experience at Disney World. She is an exciting entertainer known to join Replay’s fans on the dance floor.
Greg Lebahn of Tequila Diva, C-Rock, and The Redeemers was recruited by Rick and Mary to join Replay. Greg recognized the fantastic potential, and committed his guitar, vocal and keyboard talent to the project. Greg’s guitar work reproduces some of the greatest artists such as Eddie Van Halen and he works tirelessly to sing his leads with the sound and the emotion of the original artist.
Gary Kinman is an exceptional Austin-based bass player and vocalist with Lonesome Prayer. Gary was the perfect fit to deliver the tight bass that would lock down the rhythm section. Gary helps Replay cover the top hits in Country well thanks to his years performing in Country cover bands.
The band was one member away from the perfect line-up, and this led to the discovery of…
Michael Mewborne, lead/backup vocalist, guitarist and keyboard player. Michael has recorded two albums while performing in the LA music scene and produced shows with his music composition talents. Michael’s vocal skills add even more strength to the band’s layered vocals, and his additional acoustic/electric guitar and keyboard skills expanded the musical versatility of the group. With his and Mary’s amazing vocals, Replay is able to cover some of the greatest male/female duets few bands even attempt.
Songs you know, Artists you love. We hope to see you soon at a Replay Show.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Replay’s strategy’s is working well. We formed to perform in the better music venues in a region exclusively. Partnering with these owners allows Replay and the venues to focus on the audiences to build loyalty and familiarity which results in larger audiences. Examples include a music venue in San Antonio’s near Northside where Replay performs regularly and further North in Bulverde is another very popular venue that loves music and serves great food, too.

Replay’s strategy includes large corporate and private clients which has kept Replay very busy including a recent corporate event at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Replay has performed at the Marriott Rivercenter, and other large convention centers. Austin has hosted Replay a number of times, too, where corporations like to rent out an entire venue for Christmas and business purposes.

The challenges include saying no when already booked. Music is our passion and Mary, is a professional actress and singer who recently sang opera at the Tobin Center with a Grammy Award Winner. Replay is happy to “take a weekend off” for her musical adventures as well as any of our bandmates’ activities.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Replay’s motto is: Performing Songs You Know. Artists You Love. We are a cover band and what differentiates us is our multi-instrument capabilities that allow us to cover songs few bands attempt. Songs like Kansas’ Carry On Wayward Son which requires four-part harmonies and very talented progressive rock instrument skills is a fan hit. Vocal duets like Lady A’s, Need You Now, is a beautiful song and Mary and Michael sing it with such emotion.

Audiences are often very diverse meaning in the same audience, some want to dance all night long, some want to sit and enjoy the show, and Replay is a popular family-friendly band and kiddos love to play “air guitar” or “air drums” which we love to see. Replay performs some of the most popular Classic Rock songs that everyone likes, and mixes in for the parents with young kiddos newer Rock that they enjoyed in school. Of course, Replay performs the big dance hits in Pop, and the Country hits always get the boots out on the floor.

Some of Replay’s artists come from award winning bands and have opened for stars like Albert King, the Blues great. Others have recorded albums and all have performed for 20+ years so they know the business.

Most of all, we love to entertain.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Musicality is #1. Mary and Rick searched for the best musicians so Replay can perform the songs everyone knows at a “Tribute-‘level;” quality. We love it when an audience member comes up to us thinking the radio was on and was surprised to see Replay was playing it live.
