Daily Inspiration: Meet Rachel Spendlove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Spendlove

Hi Rachel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always known that art would play a significant role in my life. As a child, I was captivated by animated films like The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina, Swan Princess, and Anastasia. Over time, I realized it wasn’t just the stories that fascinated me—it was the art and design behind them.

At sixteen, I began sharing my artwork online, which quickly opened new doors and opportunities. However, the challenges of maintaining an online presence took a toll, and by 2012, I stepped away from posting altogether. In doing so, I unintentionally distanced myself from art and lost the passion that had once driven me. What I didn’t realize at the time was that some of my earlier work had gained significant recognition.

In 2018, the birth of my first daughter at just 30 weeks was a life-changing experience. That period of reflection helped me reconnect with my true self, my passions, and the things that genuinely mattered to me—including art. I returned to creating with a renewed perspective and fully immersed myself in my work again.

Then, in 2021, I posted a video reviewing some of my older artwork. That video unexpectedly went viral, launching me into the career I have today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I believe that’s what makes creating art—especially in a public space—so rewarding. Working directly with authors and fandoms comes with unique challenges, and over the years, it has pushed me to develop resilience and a thicker skin.

One of the biggest hurdles has been overcoming my own expectations. I tend to be my own toughest critic, and learning to navigate that has been just as important as handling external pressures. Through it all, I’ve had to remind myself to be patient and kind to my creative process, embracing both the highs and the challenges that come with it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a traditional and digital artist specializing in character design, particularly within fandoms and the book community. Over the years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with indie authors and bring their characters to life, which has been deeply fulfilling as both an artist and a storyteller.

What sets my work apart is the way I approach each piece—with emotion and a strong connection to the characters I’m portraying. I strive to create art that tells a story rather than just a static image. By capturing movement, expression, and dynamic moments, I aim to breathe life into my characters and make them feel real.

I’m best known for several pieces, including a drawing of Percy Jackson that I created over 12 years ago, which continues to resonate with fans. My work spans multiple fandoms, primarily focusing on beloved book characters, and I’m incredibly proud of the impact it has had within those communities.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe luck has played a role in my journey—it’s been the result of consistent hard work and dedication. Art is a skill that can be learned and refined through countless hours of practice and persistence. It’s about continuously pushing yourself, putting your work out there, and embracing both growth and feedback. Over time, that dedication leads you to your niche, your audience, and a supportive creative community.
