Daily Inspiration: Meet Nicole Jensen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Jensen.

Hi Nicole, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into photography started when I was young. My dad would always have a video camera/disposable camera with him whenever we went anywhere.

I was gifted a digital camera when I was 12 and would take pictures of friends, family, pets, myself, and anything beautiful I encountered. Life happened and years later I am staying home with a son that was almost one and my husband gifted me an intro DSLR camera and told me to have fun with it.

I started taking pictures of my son, and that blossomed into my business today. I love being able to capture a single moment in time, that you can look back on and remember how you felt. Sometimes, we forget things in life, and having a picture that tells a story can mean everything.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There are obstacles to oversaturation, and people look at photography that is something that should be cheap. I also compare my work to every other photographer, I am my own worst critic.

When Covid happened, I also had a significant decrease in bookings.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love photographing maternity, families, kids, graduating seniors, couples, births, newborns, and especially pets.

Whenever I photograph a client that brings their pet along, I make sure to take a portrait of just their pet. Their lives are short, and they always want to make us happy.

I love bringing light to photos, also the perfect framing of the subject with the background. I am most proud of the photos I take of my son, mostly because he is my favorite subject.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Absolutely find a photographer companion that you can brainstorm with.

One of my closest friends that was an amazing photographer helped me learn so much, and to this day I think she is the reason I have been so successful. Community over competition is the best phrase!

When I have time I try to do TFP projects so that I can get to know other creatives in my area.
