Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Valadez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a Hispanic 35-year-old female with dreams of becoming a Nurse Practitioner since I was 18 years old. I attended NMSU for my BSN and attended UTEP for my Master’s to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I have 8 years of bedside nursing and 3 years of being a Certified Nurse Practitioner.
I am from El Paso Texas, so when I graduated, I could not find a job as the job market was completely saturated. I made the difficult decision to leave home and relocate to Dallas, TX. Although I had my challenges the first year, I learned to love it there along with my career. I was finally given the opportunity to do what I am born to do. Shortly after I had adjusted to my new role, Covid-19 hit.
It was unknown to every healthcare provider around. Primary care clinics and ERs were getting overwhelmed with cases. Sometimes we had to deny appointments and walk-ins because we are overwhelmingly busy. I would come home and be exhausted and even felt burn out. Denying a pediatric patient was a horrible feeling. If the ER and urgent cares were also busy, what would happen to these sick children and stressed-out parents?
After two years of dealing with the pandemic, I realized that there was a problem. Although telemedicine was already introduced to the world, I realized that I can help find a solution. Children and parents would benefit from the convenience of in-home healthcare. This is why I decided to start my own telemedicine business!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I had to do my own research on everything from forming an LLC to finding my EMR to adjusting to the struggles of marketing and trying to obtain clients.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been a Nurse for 8 years and a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for 3 years. I have done psychiatry, hematology/oncology, home health, travel nursing, and primary care as an NP.
I am currently working on my telemedicine business and also am a clinical instructor at a nursing school.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I try to read self-help books or articles. I also enjoy reading about business and marketing along with drama and love stories.
