Daily Inspiration: Meet Marina Nolen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Nolen

Hi Marina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a freelance graphic designer and illustrator based in New Braunfels, TX. My journey into design began at Texas State University, where I studied Communication Design and graduated in 2018. After that, I jumped right into the field and have been honing my craft ever since.

In 2021, I took the leap and became a business owner, founding my own design studio. My work specializes in creating illustrations and branding services that truly resonate with brands and their audiences. What sets me apart is my ability to blend a deep understanding of brand values, target audiences, and market research, with a healthy dose of creative freedom and design magic. I believe in nurturing wild ideas in an inspiring and collaborative environment, where creativity is allowed to thrive.

Growing up in New Braunfels has played a big role in shaping my approach. It’s a place that values community, authenticity, and creativity—values that I carry with me in every project. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to work with incredible clients, helping them transform their visions into compelling visual identities that captivate and connect.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When I first transitioned into being a business owner, there was a lot to learn beyond just design. I had to quickly figure out how to manage getting jobs, handling invoicing, keeping cash flow steady, and balancing time management. On top of that, I had to find ways to maintain high work quality while managing client communication, navigating feedback, and dealing with the occasional problem that inevitably comes up in any business.

There have definitely been challenges along the way, but I wouldn’t trade those tough learning experiences for anything. Each one has taught me valuable lessons and helped me grow both as a designer and as a business owner. The road might not have been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in illustration and branding. A large portion of my work revolves around apparel design, where my unique illustrative style really shines. I’m also known for murals, which allow me to bring my designs to life on a much larger scale.

What sets me apart is my whimsical, nature-inspired illustration style, which often draws on elements of Texas landscapes and wildlife. I think it’s this combination of playfulness and regional influence that makes my work recognizable. People know my designs for their vibrant, detailed nature—whether it’s a winding river, a cactus, or a wildflower, my work always aims to portray a sense of place and story.

I’m most proud of the connections I’ve built with my clients and the impact my designs have had. Whether it’s a brand that finally feels visually aligned with its mission or a mural that transforms a space, knowing my work helps tell someone else’s story is incredibly fulfilling.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing that might surprise most people who know me or my work is that I’m also a cowgirl! Growing up in Texas, I’ve always had a deep connection to the land, and spending time outdoors has shaped both my life and my art. There’s something about the cowboy spirit that ties back to my work—whether it’s the rugged landscapes that inspire my designs or the perseverance it takes to run a business. The two worlds might seem different at first glance, but they both have a huge influence on who I am and what I create.
