Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Moore.
Hi Jose, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating from college, Jose Moore started his career in an office position with the local Boy Scouts. To better provide for his family, he also took on a second job at a street sweeping company. While working there, Jose quickly realized he had a strong talent for business and played a major role in helping the company grow in a relatively short amount of time. Following his time with the company, he chose to pursue entrepreneurship on his own. Driven by a commitment to service and a relentless entrepreneurial mindset, Jose established Moore Clean LLC in 2001. Without access to credit lines, credit cards, or financial support from relatives, he used his personal savings to purchase a used street sweeper truck for $3,500 in cash. From there, Jose with the help of his wife Laura, began offering parking lot sweeping and property maintenance services to businesses and commercial properties in the local community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Jose faced what most starting entrepreneurs face, the initial challenge of inefficiency, as he discovered the cost of running his old sweeper was often higher than the monthly income it generated. The hidden costs of maintaining sweeper trucks and other equipment can surprise any beginner. Dedicating time to run a new company and get it off the ground put a strain on relationships with family and relatives. Funding was also difficult to obtain for new entrepreneurs, especially without stellar credit. In addition payments in commercial business can sometimes take longer to clear than normal.
Jose worked in the area’s district office for the Boy Scouts of America in Austin Tx, after college in Abilene Christian University, moving with his wife Laura whom he met in college. Laura had a job working as a staffer in the governor’s office for George W. Bush. Unfortunately, the combination of an entry-level government job with that of a nonprofit salary wasn’t enough to allow the couple to live comfortably in the high-priced Austin area, especially after their first child arrived a year later. Initially, Jose went to work for a sweeping company in order to subsidize their income. With his input, the business grew significantly in a short amount of time. This spurred a joint venture between the owner and Moore to spin off a division of the company that would specialize in oil spill cleanup. However, this venture ultimately didn’t come to fruition and Moore ended up starting his own sweeping company.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The main areas the company specializes in are parking lot sweeping, highway and neighborhood street sweeping , and construction site clean-up sweeping. We also offer support services such as debris removal, window cleaning, daytime periodic trash pickup and small maintenance repairs that a commercial business property would need. We are most proud of our integrity to customers, quick and efficient service, and being a community oriented business. What sets us apart is we have our own repair shops for our trucks and equipment, and our mechanics are part of our employee family.
Jose founded and coached Austin United Basketball, a youth basketball teams for under-served boys and girls in central Texas. Austin United Basketball won numerous regional state championships in it’s 6 year run and garnered the respect and admiration of parents and coaches. Jose retired the team as Moore Clean experienced a rapid increase in growth that required his full attention.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What we like the best is a sense of community and belonging. San Antonio has a sense of family and we have got to know some really awesome people, whether it be individual families or organizations we support. We have been invited to and attended some great events, including the Annual Chamber of Commerce gala, and many more community driven events. Although we operate out of San Antonio, our headquarters where we began is out of Georgetown Texas, a suburb of Austin, that also has a small town feel with a sense of community.
