Daily Inspiration: Meet John Dye

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Dye.

Hi John, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a child I have had an interest in preserving moments in time for posterity, and through photography, I think I have found some level of permanence in an otherwise very ephemeral world. Though I studied geology and have a love of history, it is through photography that all of these things can be in some way related and intertwined. Be it through the chemistry of silver crystals on paper, or the story behind a photograph of something that no longer exists. This is the art I have found and explored for the past 8 years.

Film photography and darkroom printing, however, I have only discovered in the past 3 years. For lack of any formal artistic training in school, I have gotten relatively proficient and I plan to continue exploring and expanding this craft.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a struggle finding time to balance actually looking back and taking in my photographs while also enduring the rigors of University in undergraduate and now graduate school at UTSA.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a geologist, my trade does not focus on my art, but rather on Volcanos. I have spent the past 3 years developing my knowledge of the world around us to better help people who live in volcanologically hazardous regions, such as Hawai’i, Iceland, or the Pacific Northwest.

How do you define success?
Success is a goalpost one sets for themselves, even the biggest failure can become a success if one learns from it.
