Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Johnson.
Hi Jenny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’m from Bay City, Texas. I grew up loving all things comedy. I weirdly never thought it would ever be something I could do as a career. But I watched anything with Leslie Nielsen, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Pee-wee Herman (my childhood hero), Gilda Radner, and George Carlin.
Always with my dad. I went on to graduate from Sam Houston State University with a degree in broadcast journalism.
I moved to Austin after graduation and worked at FOX 7 as a sports intern and camera operator. I went on to work as an editor, sports producer, and news producer at KSAT 12 and KTRK in Houston. During my time as a news producer, Twitter became a new thing and I decided to write the comedian’s thoughts in my head on this new form of social media.
From there my comedy career took off. Being a person no one knew to get over 300k followers is pretty wild. I ended up with an agent and manager and selling my pilot to ABC. After writing for a long I decided to try and tell my jokes on stage. That was in 2015. Now I am opening for Nick Swardson at the Aztec Theater in San Antonio. Pretty cool.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles I’ve felt the most were post-pandemic.
Being locked down for that amount of time and being off stage really messes with your mind. I sometimes feel a tremendous amount of anxiety vs the typical butterflies I would normally get before I take the stage. I welcome those butterflies. I think the day I stop having them is the day I should stop doing comedy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a comedian, writer, podcast host, actress, social media stud, and all-around badass. Been on Drunk History twice and played a prostitute on The Mick once.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My mom is from San Antonio. She went to Jefferson High School. It’s always felt like home because of that. I also lived here and worked at KSAT12 for a period of time so this city will always hold a special place in my heart.
